“Baggins and Tape”
“In the event of a water landing, I have been designed to serve as a flotation device” And even more rain in Central Texas…and even more mosquitoes, although I have noticed that they are getting slower, their desperation for the red matter making them easier to swat. There are also some mosquito-monsters, what is that? Is that a? You have got to be kidding me… some are so large, getting stung is like getting stabbed with a knitting needle. Hey, everything is bigger i... Read Full Story
“The Company of Wolves”
unidentified
Painting of the famous rhyme Little Red Riding Hood by French painter Fleury Francois Richard (1777-1852).   Louvre Museum. We recently were talking about this rather surreal tale in the Patch, (my eldest hobbit is reading “Little Red”) so I thought I would check it out in a little more detail. As it turns out there are quite a few different variations of the story, variations teachers would never dare to read to you in school, for fear of being arrested, and making prime-time new... A Hard Days Work in the Garden?
Lager
What better at the end of a hard days work in the garden, then to sit down on your back deck, to savor a deliciously refreshing, ice cold… “Value Lager”? Life doesn’t get any better, or generic, does it? Read Full Story
“The Sacrifice”

photo curtesy of Dave http://www.flickr.com/photos/grizdave/ The strangest thing happened to me the other day… Hiking in an uncharted  patch of the Patch, I noticed that I was ascending, I climbed steadily uphill for about two solid hours.  I suddenly came to a clearing on top of a huge rock, it seems my rock was one of three holey rocks in the range, towering up out of the lower jungle verbena canopy.  Stunned by the breathtaking view I sat down for a brief rest and one of my first ... “Silence is Golden”
DSC00648
Continued… As I leaned forward, duct tape at the ready, her botoxed lips reverberated with every exhale,  showering me with an extraordinary amount of saliva. She was still fast asleep, or so I thought, but I began to worry…would the adhesive work with such an abundance of moisture?  I soldiered on, ever closer. It seemed the whole garden fell silent, it was if every creature in the ESP was completely stationary, waiting to see what would happen next… The brown-nosers d... Read Full Story
Picture This Photo Contest “The End of the Line”
Pride of Barbados Seedpod
Here is my entry for November’s “The End of the Line” Picture This Photo Contest at http://www.gardeninggonewild.com/?p=9088#more-9088 Okay so it is a curvy line!  A line of Pride of Barbados seedpods are ready to drop their final young in a last ditch attempt to propagate themselves for next year. Like dug-out canoes, these seedpods are providing a safe harbor for these precious, year-end cradled seeds. Read Full Story
“CUT”!
Mosquito
Syrphid Fly? or Waspy, green, grass-hoppery weird bee thingy, summat or nothin’? This adult Syrphid Fly (I hope I am right with this identification) is unlike any I have ever seen in the Patch…It is green! What manner of creature is he trying to mimic? Most Hoverflies mimic bees and wasps to protect themselves from predators, this one even had a “buzz” sound as it flew around, trying to be even more convincing…but green? I know it is a fly as it has only two wi... Read Full Story

“A Patch-Work Orange”
Fragrant Mist Flower
Ghost House I DWELL in a lonely house I know That vanished many a summer ago, And left no trace but the cellar walls, And a cellar in which the daylight falls, And the purple-stemmed wild raspberries grow. O’er ruined fences the grape-vines shield The woods come back to the mowing field; The orchard tree has grown one copse Of new wood and old where the woodpecker chops; The footpath down to the well is healed. Image taken from jipol’s Flickr photostream under the creative commons a... Read Full Story
“Panic in the Patch”
DSC00019
“Hit the button! Hit the button, now!” Panic is setting in, in the patch. My eyes are being called upon to be extra critical… what needs to be changed?  What would a set of fresh eyes see?  More importantly what would a camera lens see?  Is the lens forgiving?  Perhaps there is a camera “weed” filter for the camera?  Linda, tell me this exists? The ESP is scheduled for a “Central Texas Gardener” film shoot shortly, and the Botox lady is very pleased ... Read Full Story
