Puhleeez! What MLB Player ISN’T on Drugs?????

USA Today just reported that LA Dodger’s star outfielder, Manny Ramirez has been suspended for 50 games for testing positive for performance enhancing drugs.

Now, I ask you where is the news in that? I mean come on now — what MLB player HASN’T tested positive for some kind of drugs lately?? If it’s not steroids it’s something else either legal or illegal, but banned from competitive sport nevertheless. These guys just seem to figure that if they escape getting caught, it’s no big deal and if they DO get caught, the worst they can get is what?? BIG media coverage, Internet buzz and maybe a slap on the wrist from the MLB Association.

While 50 games sounds like a lot, he’ll be back in the field July 3rd.

It seems like all the star quality players in every professional (and many amateur!) sport played in the US takes drugs.

It’s becoming nearly impossible to find someone you can safely let your kid look up to as a role model — I don’t know about you but I don’t want my grandkids growing up to think that using ANY kind of drug is OK — even aspirin!

I know, Manny is saying this was prescribed by his physician, etc, etc, etc and the truth will out before all the hoopla has died down. For his sake, I hope he’s telling the truth. It will certainly go a long way towards restoring my faith in what sports figures tell the media when caught with their (figurative) pants down.

Sports bloggers are all talking about it. Some, like me think it’s all too common amongst the elite and highly paid players. And according to The Monster, the 50 game suspension translates into quite a chunk of change for him. And his loss for these games, according to WPRI blog is going to reduce the Dodgers’ chances of making it to the playoffs.

So, what do you think? Is Manny guilty? Did he know his doc was giving him something that was banned but chose to ignore it hoping to skate by? Is a 50 game suspension adequate punishment for such a violation? Or is it too much?
