Make Someone Smile Today

black beretShe walked in with a spring in her step and a twitch to her hips. The black felt beret was tilted at a jaunty angle over one eye. She carried herself proudly aware of her impact on the other patrons in the restaurant.

The skirt of her dress swirled around her knees as she walked, drawing the eye to her black lace stockings. The heels she wore made her legs look like a dancer’s. Her strides were long and confident.

While strapless and daring, the dress was modestly covered by the black lace shrug tied under her breasts. It too stamped her as all female.

She spoke animatedly to her partner using hand gestures and making eye contact with him in a flirtatious manner. He didn’t appear to be tuned in, though. His attention was more on his plate than on his vivacious partner. Still, she wasn’t deterred. She knew that her audience was at the other tables.

I called Ken’s attention to her. He nodded approvingly then laughed and remarked that the dress was like something out of the 20’s or 30’s — flapper girl kind of. It wasn’t but I didn’t correct him. It did have that flavor.

The lady was in her 70’s and the dress far more suited to a young girl, but she wore it with panache.

We paid our check and got up to leave.

As we walked by their table, I leaned down, touching her shoulder lightly and told her in a quiet voice how much I loved her dress. I told her she looked like she was ready to Tango the night away.

She threw back her head in a gusty laugh, flung her hands into  the air, snapped her fingers and said “Bring on the music!”. We smiled that smile that women share when they are one and I walked on.

Ken asked me as we left the restaurant what I had said and I told him. He said, you know, don’t you that she’s still smiling.

Sometimes they call these random acts of kindness. I don’t know why but every once in awhile someone catches my eye and I’m compelled to say or do something for them. Something to make their day a little nicer.

She was a stranger and I’ll probably never see her again, but today, we both smiled and were happy.
