A rod, an extension of your arm
it’s early in the morning and the fog is still gently rolling off the pond
SNAP
bad day for a certain lunar moth or other aquatic life
I feel the energy being cast on my back from the fiery sun rising over the precipitous mountain to my left,
the fall foliage becomes clear on the undisturbed surface of the water
I tickle a dry coachmen over the glassy water
but suddenly the silence is broken
the serenity shattered
as a brilliant red fla... Read Full Story

Moody’s spawning is in full swing for all of this year stockies (brook, bow and browns) and I’ve been doing more observing and underwater filming than fishing as of recent.
The past couple of days the pond has been covered in milt and large spawning beds have been cleared. I caught a rainbow a week ago that was dropping eggs when I inspected it. I always look the fish over for disease and health. Fishing has stopped to allow the fish to get down to business without interruption.... Read Full Story

I was scheduled to take care of some car stuff up by north this Friday and I got a call from a pal who frequents Moody Pond. His name is Toby and he’s hooked on fly fishing.
A little background, Toby is new to fly fishing and has fished the pond with me and on his own a number of times. The kid is a natural to say the least. He’s caught a number of fish when no one else was catching on Moody.
Toby had never fished the Androscoggin River or has experienced wade fishing in wader... Read Full Story

With the fall season quickly approaching, here in the North East it’s time to gear up and make sure you have a healthy supply of bait fish imitations for the fall fattening season and slumpbusters are a great pattern for hungry fish like this rainbow.
Another great bunny bait fish pattern if your looking to live a bit larger is
Nome’s Nusance

Well, my neighbor’s grandson (who is an avid fly fisher) is over from across the big pond and this morning we got a chance to fish Moody.
It was an active morning with all the thunder rolling around us and casting in between the burst of storms during the torrential rains we really don’t need (hint to mother N).
Jonathan is a real trooper and fared the couple of inches quite well. It was all exciting to him as it was the first time fishing in the rain with storms all around us. F... Read Full Story

As the mercury creeps up, I, along with the trout, seek colder waters and shade. Most of my fishing as of late has been just that, small streams where the 7ft 3wt is king. The following report is a combination of two days during last week.
Small stream fishing brings the kid out in me and lets my imagination run wild. My mind transports me to the early 19th century and I can see the settlers crossing the streams or the Abenaki tribes trekking through the woods and meadows with great old oaks... Read Full Story

Great river this time of year, the dry fly action is sweet and the gin clear waters allow you to see the whole process take place before your eyes.
The goal was to fish a little over a river mile to the junction pool, but the weather had different plans for us.
This sections of the river is pocket water heaven….
I love fishing upstream, but downstream has it’s advantages as well, far easier to skate flys. We hit lots of brookies and bows in the smallish size. I hiked upstream ... Read Full Story

Ginger Saddle hackle for the final collar
With the hatching of the giant sedge on Moody and golden stone flies all over the Wildcat and Ellis this fly is my bread and butter for above surface action this time of year…
For the stone I make the body a dirty or smoke yellow and a blond deer hair wing.
