B-17 Sentimental Journey on Tour

The historic World War Two-era B-17 operated by the Arizona Wing of the Commemorative Air Force, visited Missoula, Montana June 22-26, 2009, and was on public display. The Commemorative Air Force has a terrific website which is linked above.

The aircraft also made several flights around the area, providing rides to aircraft enthusiasts for $475 per passenger.

The above photo shows bomb racks on each side and a "very" narrow passageway used to move between cockpit and after compartments. The "deck" is that narrow, metal area at bottom of photo in the center. Too narrow to turn around within.

After crawling around the cramped spaces of the aircraft, I decided that there was no way in hell that I would ever want to fly in this. I am claustrophobic and this would be really scary.

I have long admired and greatly respected those WWII air crews who risked their lives flying bombing missions in the B-17. I can not even imagine what it must have been like to be shot at. Very scary to think about.

Late yesterday afternoon, this B-17 flew over my house outside of Missoula. I heard that distinctive engine sound....like something out of a WWII movie...it was wonderful.
