Net profits at luxury retailer Bulgari fell 8.8 percent to EUR 31.4 million ($48.9 million) in the second quarter of 2008 brought down by higher operating costs, a slump in its watch sales and sluggish performance the America’s region. Online jewelry sales in the United States fell 10 percent in the second quarter of 2008, Comscore, which monitors online trends, reported. Total online retail sales (excluding travel) rose 13 percent to $31 billion during the three months ending June 30, 2008. Gitanjali Gems had a strong first quarter of fiscal 2008-09 as its jewelry unit boosted sales and profits. Group sales rose 8.8 percent to INR 7.12 billion ($168.29 million) in the three months ending June 30 with jewelry sales up 16 percent to INR 2.29 billion ($54.22 million,) and diamond revenues rising 11 percent to INR 5.11 billion ($120.97 million.)
