Website Types: Static versus Dynamic

As I have discussed in previous articles, everything is driven by application, and in web development circles we often talk about static versus dynamic websites. One client will need a static website while another client will need a dynamic website. Depending on the overall website development objective, a website will be static, dynamic, or both.

With the exception of minor text or image updates, a static website never changes. Static websites provide static or fixed information including company facts, products, services, location, hours, and contact information. Static websites are ideal when businesses and organizations seek to attract new clientele, financial donors, government contracts, and the like. Every website is likely to include static web pages.

Dynamic websites are designed to do something as a result of interaction with the visitor. The content changes frequently and is often generated “on the fly,” meaning the computer where the website is hosted (the server) might pull information from a database, create a web page, and provide the information to the website visitor through the browser. Dynamic websites typically occur in the form of news article websites and ecommerce websites, where information is queried and displayed.

Some websites are static and dynamic. For instance, the Kern Tech Support website which is geared toward clients interested in web design in Bakersfield contains static and dynamic elements. Some pages rarely change while others receive periodic updates—either way, those pages are considered static. By contrast, the blog section of Kern Tech Support is interactive, meaning articles are added regularly and anyone can interact with the blog author. Blogs are a great tool for public relations.

Chances are likely your business or organization will benefit from a combination of static website and dynamic website elements. On one hand, if you are just starting out and you want to introduce your service oriented small business to potential clients, a static website is ideal. On the other hand, if you want to sell your product, accept payments, and interact with your clients, a dynamic website is warranted. Call Kern Tech Support today and let us design a static or dynamic website that is best suited to your company goals.
