Best Albums of the 2000s: 2007
Reader’s choice/PMA choice: Radiohead – In RainbowsSo far this column has dedicated itself to two albums each year. We’ve liked that model… it’s given us the ability to delve into more bands each year, and discuss more music. It’s worked too, since generally there have been multiple bands that deserve “Best of…” honors. 2007 was a GREAT year for music. One of the best I can remember. You guys voted and you selected In Rainbows… the problem being: WE AGREE. Wholeheartedly agree. It’s Radiohe... Read Full Story
Animal Collective – What Would I Want? Sky
The Grateful Dead sample in this Animal Collective song, the only authorized sample of its kind, is off a track on their new Fall Be Kind EP. It consists of the lyric, “Willow sky/ Whoa, I walk and wonder why.” But in the song, Animal Collective. samples the line so it begins in the middle and ends with the beginning – basically, you mishear it as the track’s title: “What Would I Want? Sky.” Dude, trippy. The song begins with a three minute instrumental, a psychedelic Willy Wonkian boat trip ... Read Full Story
Best Songs of the Decade (2000-2009)
After much thought, I decided that I wasn’t satisfied with my original list, nor my execution of it. I have done a lot of reviewing and listening over the last few weeks for both the Decade-End and Year-End celebration that you will see here in the coming weeks. This has helped me through the revision and tightening of this list.I will reveal PMA’s picks for Best Songs of the Decade in three parts; each part will contain 25 songs that will make up a new episode of the pmaCAST. Her... Read Full Story

The Notwist – Boneless (Grizzly Bear Remix)
The Notwist somehow commissioned this rare Grizzly Bear remix for their upcoming single “Come In”. Grizzly Bear bring something new to the table, something they didn’t quite touch base on with their latest release, Veckatimest. It’s curious though, I mean, can you imagine a Grizzly Bear song sounding like this? Fuzzy, fireworks drumming and blips abound? Here’s the mp3, courtesy of Chris Taylor’s Terrible Records blog (via GvsB): MP3: The Notwist – Bo... Read Full Story

Grizzly Bear – Cheerleader (Neon Indian Remixes)
Photo Courtesy of Force Field PRNeon Indian, whose album perplexed us, has remixed Grizzly Bear’s “Cheerleader” — off the PMA-adored Veckatimest — not once, but twice. As expected, the remixes sound like Grizzly Bear through a psychedelic lo-fi filter. What wasn’t expected was how well Grizzly Bear wears this filter. The first remix is called “Neon Indian ‘Sega Genesis P-Orridge’ Remix” and is a bit more up-beat than its sister-remix;... Memory Tapes – Graphics / Easy Pert Mom
Goddamn this Graphics EP is good. It’s one man from New Jersey… channeling Battles, 1980’s Vangelis synths, pop-song chord progressions, Hot Chip electro-blips and bloops, and well… to be honest, I’m doing the improbably-named Dayve Hawk a disservice by limiting him with comparisons to other bands.Considering that Hawk (as Memory Tapes) is often grouped with (admittedly stellar) Washed Out and Neon Indian in some vague genre-ish thing called “Chill-Gaze” (ok not really), this EP can bang. ... Bear In Heaven – Lovesick Teenagers
Bear in Heaven is another indie band with synths from Brooklyn, and “Lovesick Teenagers” is another minor-key, moderately down-tempo song for lying in bed and staring at the ceiling. And you know what? it’s pretty damn good — the synth line finds that groove — the beauty of repetition that seems to be DFA records’ ethos — but this isn’t dance music, or even music for dancing.Jon Philpot’s vocals are mournful, and this song feels like a dirge for, well, a love now past...
