Phenomenal “Must Have” Debut CD By Adele - 19

Being a fan of the sounds created by a new wave of fantastic female singers like Amy Winehouse and Duffy, I was interested in hearing what all the fuss was about yet another female British songstress simply named…Adele.

Adele Adkins’ debut CD, 19, turned out to be one of those CDs that I feel is a must have in any music lovers collection. Adele presents us with a very soulful voice for such a young singer (currently 20 at the time of this writing). Having already won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Adele’s successful efforts have proved that the U.S. is ready for and welcoming of the musicality of such phenomenal vocal talents.

19 peaked on the Billboard 200 charts at #10, and at the time of this post, the CD is at #38 having been on the charts for 40 weeks and going.

Highlights abound all over the 12 audio tracks of 19, with some of the brightest being the initial single, “Chasing Pavements” which has sprouted a number of “covers” on the popular YouTube website. The cover of Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love” brought tears to my eyes with its resigned forlornness. (Who hasn’t felt like the protagonist of this song at one time or another?)

19 opens with the serene “Daydreamer”. Beautifully executed with only voice and acoustic guitar, you are transported to a simpler musical time along the likes of Melanie (Safka), Petula Clark, Lulu, or Marianne Faithfull.

“Melt My Heart To Stone” is another fabulously heartwrenching song of troubles in love. “Cold Shoulder”, “Tired” and “Right As Rain”, while all more up tempo style songs, and very catchy musically… again, Adele proves that she is the new diva of heartbreak soul. The CD closes with the track, “Hometown Glory”. A beautiful track, with some actually quite positive lyrics compared to the mostly heartbreaking CD, has been featured on a number of television shows including the popular drama, Grey’s Anatomy. I have been very impressed with this debut effort of Adele’s and it is on my new music highly recommended list, without a doubt. If this young woman plays her cards right, with her voice and her songwriting skills, she could have a lustrous career. Let’s hope that she does.
