Twitter Statistics
A recent article from HubSpot.com has new statistics on the activity all 4.5 million of Twitter accounts. The first being that Twitter now has 4.5 million accounts. The stats in some ways show the growth of Twitter, yet in other ways, show that Twitter is not used as much aside from initial registration.
Most users are from English speaking metropolitan cities, with London being the biggest. Followed by Los Angeles, Chicago and New York. No real shocker there. People must be getting sidetracked at work because of Twitter. The most popular to time to tweet is during Monday through Friday and during normal business hours. Also, people appear to be wanting to say more, using abbreviations for everything trying to get as much in to the 140 character box as possible. Maybe Twitter should consider increasing this, though how would that work from text messaging? We’re not sure. We wonder how many people tweet from their phones and how many receive tweets to their phone. This info was not provided.
Some average user and tweet stats:
* The average user tweets .97 times per day
* The average user has tweeted 119.34 times in total
* The average user has a following-to-follower ratio of .7738
* 1.44% of all tweets are retweets
* 37.95% of all tweets contain an “@” symbol (mentions)
* 33.44% of all tweets start with an “@” symbol (replies)
Looking at these statistics, Twitter may look bleak.
* 79.79% failed to provide a homepage URL
* 75.86% of users have not entered a bio in their profile
* 68.68% have not specified a location
* 55.50% are not following anyone
* 54.88% have never tweeted
* 52.71% have no followers
It could be though, that people just don’t care enough to fill out some info, or probably do not have a homepage to provide. HubSpot felt that was not an accurate way to see how many accounts were ACTUALLY active. They made these terms to qualify an “inactive” account.
* Fewer than 10 followers
* Fewer than 10 friends
* Fewer than 10 updates
Using this, they said, “By this definition, 9.06% of all Twitter users are inactive.” This is the second year this report has been done by HubSpot. We shall see what comes out next year. More growth? Decline? It could very likely be MORE growth with all the attention Twitter is still getting, including the T.V. show in the works.
