CAUTION: Monster post with lots of pics All in all… it came out fairly cool looking and it wasn’t too hard to put together. It was a ton of math and measuring every little thing to make sure it would all fit together. I’m worried that somewhere along the line I‘m going to add something or make a change that is going to affect the rest of the construction and I won’t have the materials to recover (without incurring an additional monetary cost). But so far, patience and careful planning... Read Full Story
Wow, tons of stuff this go around so lets get to it. 1. New site layout It's tough these days, with guys like Admiral Drax constantly updating their blogs and adding great new content, it's getting harder and harder to keep up with the Jones. With this change, I'm really trying to focus on the modeling and painting and highlight those aspects along with other bloggers and sites that promote that as well. Sure there's the battle reports and rumors and other stuff but I've gotten so much... Read Full Story
So this post sort of spawned from the comments from How I highlight Black Armour. We got to talking about various techniques and "Layering" was mentioned. I thought, why not put together a samll tutorial showing how I "layer" when I paint my models. So... here's the end result on two models I pulled out for examples. The first here is a Dreadnought. The tabard is done with this technique. This example is fairly loose and only uses two colors. This one is my White Scar Sergeant. This... Read Full Story
Where to start… Let’s see, I’ve got the mock-up of the Imperial Palace done. I’m actually further along now but for this post, here’s where we’re at.UPDATE: The facade is nearly complete. One last piece on the front of the eagle and I'll be moving on to the side walls next week. Just waiting for some glue to dry. Look for all the pics from the "Facade Construction" some time this weekend. I'd like to thank everyone who has stopped by to take a look. I won’t talk about the Sketches and... Read Full Story
"Washes allow you to shade a lighter base colour quickly, and the technique adds a level of realism to areas such as skin, hair, fur, and metal. A wash basically stains an area on the model and then sinks into the detailed crevices of a miniature to create shadow." From Games WorkshopSounds easy enough to do right?Honestly, I don't use many washes on my models. I'm a big fan of the "layering" approach. For a couple of reasons. 1. Comfort, I know how to do it already. 2. It's fairly quick... Read Full Story
The Tank Factory is finally finished. To see the Sketches and Planning and Construction, follow those links. Here are a handful of finished pics of the whole thing and some smaller areas. As you guys know, this is my first large terrain piece using spray paint to put down the base color. Now that I'm done, I would give the whole spray paint approach a big "thumbs up" and would tell anyone else that it's the way to go. I really enjoyed working on this and the speed I was able to finish it... Read Full Story
This post and small tutorial (if you can call it that) comes by way of talking with Vinci76 over at his blog, Templar Vanquish. A little while ago, he posted about Highlighting a black tank. With my Black Templars, I have 2 Land Raider Crusaders that I sat down and line highlighted. In the course of our discussions, someone used the term "Mascara Marines" which is a great way of describing the approach I use. Not the most endearing term but accurate nonetheless. So... here's what I did to... Read Full Story
Just thought I would put up a quick post to let you guys know about my experience with spray paint and terrain. I'm right in the middle of finishing my Imperial Tank Factory (Sketches and Planning, Construction) and since this thing is so big, I thought I would try spray painting it to get the base coat down instead of using regular brush paint. A while ago, I came across an article done by GW where they talked about using spray paint to get your base colors down and I tucked it away... Read Full Story
