I'm often thinking about the interface between science and art and whether they can meet without one drowning out the other. Aquatic bodywork, with its inherent beauty of form and experience, might be one such meeting place.
Recently, I came across an article in the Institute of Sport and Remedial Massage (UK), Newsletter, March 2011(16) . Its title was 'Underwater Massage Ballet' and its subtitle 'Exploring the muscle reprogramming potential of Watsu'.
Aside from the scientific tone of... Read Full Story

I'm delighted to present Vision Spa Retreat's first guest post from Kate Riley. Kate is an Eco-Centered Spa Consultant and Therapist Educator and determined to 'raise the bar' in both arenas. In her own healing work, she specializes in a sensitive approach to chronic pain relief. Recently, Kate and I have been enjoying a flow of conversation about what it really takes to create a spa environment that epitomizes caring for people and planet. Most children enjoy water play: it's a sensory extravaganza and a sensational learning experience. One of the things I love about aquatic bodywork is that it can bring back these memories of joy and bliss. The movements are liberating: floating, submerging, skimming, spinning, rolling, bobbing, and - if you're using Floatli ® - frog jog.
Recently, aquatic exercise expert Pamela Morse sent me some Floatli ® - a set of floatation devices she designed - to try out. I hadn't had any instruction... Read Full Story

Beyond bodywork skills, training in somatic psychotherapy (combining body-based and verbal interventions), together with the ability to recognize and work appropriately with possible early developmental issues in a client, can greatly enhance the healing potential of an aquatic session.
When, as adults, we experience disproportionate symptoms of stress, it may be that our primal brainstem memory is being triggered. It has been suggested that adult anxiety, panic attacks, fear, depression... Read Full Story

This July I had the opportunity to celebrate my birthday by participating in a very special aquatic class with David Sawyer LPC and assisted by Mary Seamster. I've written about his work in two previous posts (links below) and will soon write more as I integrate and attempt to articulate my recent experience in more detail.
In the meantime, here is an extended copy of the feedback submission I made to WABA ( Worldwide Aquatic Bodywork Association ) describing Prenatal Journey for other... Read Full Story

Aqua4Balance is a unique web resource that has been spreading the word about water as a significant part of the wellness movement. The information is presented in a bright, clear and thorough way. It certainly reflects all that is healing about water. The inspiration behind it is Hanni Sem from Israel who describes herself simply as an aquatic bodywork practitioner, graphic designer, and globe-trotter. All these influences are apparent in the website which provides easy, inspiring and... Read Full Story

For me, a pool is a portal and the water the medium by which I can journey.
There are no maps except those that are made as I go along - repatterning soma and psyche - exploring unfamiliar territory.
I follow the shape of the sea-bed, where all my submerged experiences and all their hidden potential lies.
Traveling lightly, discarding encumbrances along the way, letting life flow through me, I may begin to see another way of being.
To journey well is to be neither passive nor... Read Full Story
