Are Internet Gurus A**holes?

If we are to become internet gurus, do we have to become jerks as well?
I got to thinking today a little bit about a conversation I was having the other day with a marketer friend of mine. We were discussing sales from a recent promotion. In our conversation, I said, “No, actually that whole promotion didn’t do very well for me.” Certainly not compared to all of the hours of work that had went into it.
It seems sales for a lot of marketers are down the last little while. Whether it’s become somewhat saturated recently on certain types of products, or there are just to many people becoming numb to a lot of what is being marketed. It’s not seeming to matter whether it is very good, or of top high quality or not, sales are down. People have become numb to even the greatest information and products out there in some cases it seems.
We were discussing the business and about people who are considered the “internet gurus”, and we were sort of wondering how many of them are doing these days. Wondering, if they to, are noticing a decline in sales of many of their products. It was all relative to the conversation I guess.
I’m not to sure how we got to this point, but the conversation turned to him saying to me, “Oh, so you are one of those nice marketers!” The comment sort of caught me a little off guard, for a moment. I wasn’t quite sure at the start of what he meant. I guess if you call trying to help newer people out when I can with things, and trying to be as upfront as I can with them about everything, then, yeah I guess I’m a nice marketer.
If that is the case, does that make all of the internet gurus out there making insane amounts of money yearly jerks or a**holes or something? Ha..ha Hmmm, so is that what it takes to be an internet guru? I just have to be a jerk? Well..I wish somebody had of told me that long ago. I guess I just don’t ever stand a chance of becoming one of the complete elite guru types…it that’s the case! Needless to say, it was an interesting converation.
I guess with all of the slick sales pages out there, with big promises and leaving people without the results they were expecting perhaps some people are just tired. Personally, although being a marketer, I must admit I’ve grown quite numb to it all as well. In a lot of cases, I’m under the belief that with many products, people have their fingertips on the source to their success. It’s lack of action with the information being a lot of the problem I think.
It’s silly to me to think that a person has to become a ruthless jerk in this business to be very successful. Actually, I think quite the opposite is true. If you are to be labeled a jerk or a deceitful piece of crap early on in your marketing career, I really don’t think it’s going to do much for your relationships with other marketers and your customers. While we do certainly have our share of scammers out there, for the most part the people that I’ve either come to know, or have spoken to that could be considered gurus are not that way at all.
There are however, in my opinion, some gurus who only pretend to have your best interest at heart. They do start off seemingly wanting to help out people along their path, only to want you to pull out your credit card in the end to fork over a TON of money. Sure, there are some programs and personal coaching out there that might be worth thousands of dollars, but, there is even more products I would say that are just insanely overpriced for the value received.
Seriously, If a guy like Yaro Staryk who’s training and knowledge would be worth thousands to people, can have a training course where it’s only costing a person say $97 a month, then, how can a person with much less credibility turn around and be asking for $397 a month justify the cost? It’s in cases such as this where I think the little guys are simply being taken advantage of because of their lack of knowledge in the industry. The exception to the rule here to is, if it’s something like PLRPro, or The Authority Site Center, where you are supplied with all of the software tools etc. to be successful, it’s a bit of a different story.
Karma can certainly come into play here as well, I figure. It’s an old saying, “What comes around, goes around”, but I still believe there is a lot of wisdom in those words. While it may take a little longer to “come around” than perhaps we would like it to, I think if you are basically a good person and pass on kindness and compassion that you have been shown along to people, eventually that good karma will be rewarded. At least, that’s what my gut tells me, and the path I’m sure God prefers us to take.
So, to become one of the elite internet gurus, do we all have to become a**holes? Well, if that’s the case, I don’t think I’m interested.
