I saw this on twitter today as a trending topic. #heyxboxlive and I was instantly intrigued.

Lots ofthoughts went through my head as to what this hashtag could be used for, but not until I saw the recent comments involving it did I fully understand what xbox live was up to.

Get this … they were listening to their consumers. Yeah, strange right ? Believe it or not you can use social media to LISTEN to your audience for a change and get some amazing feedback. Incredibly, a few brands are finally getting it - listening is just as important. Everyone today thinks that social media means that you talk. Well, while it can be true sometimes (for transparency, brand building, and relationship clarity) it’s so very important to listen. Meanwhile you are building relationships, getting some advice from the people who champion your brand, and take some time out of one-way communication to actually point the arrow of conversation towards yourself. “TALK TO US !” is basically what they are saying.

Take your business out for a date today. Sit across from the table and listen to your business go ON and ON about themselves, how cool their products are, and how great their customer service is … and you will never call her again. You later go to your buddies and say … “man, all she did was talk about herself the entire time … what about what I think about her … she could use some improvement too y’know …”

Interestingly enough, the #heyxboxlive campaign doesn’t even start for a few more hours … and it already trended on twitter. That’s listening power that also gets your brand some great awareness, feedback, and reception. People love being a part of your company.

So what should they do next ? Reward those who got involved and made a great contribution to their listening campaign. Let them be a part of the culture and accept them as a piece of your company.
