Whats the best way of protecting (life span) of a laptop’s battery?

I heard that if one is on AC power, it still charges the battery, so it ends up with OVERCHARGING ones’ battery and shortens’ its life.

So what i do now is plug and when i see my battery full charged, i will shift to battery-use until it prompts that i need to switch to AC power

Please let me know if i am doing the right thing in taking care of my laptop’s battery. Thanks!
