Mary Depner, who also authored “100 Echo Booming Monologues for Teens,” is an experienced former drama teacher and her books of monologues work well for most teens. In Sugared & Spiced 100 Monologues for Girls Depner gives teen girls some outstanding pieces to work with.
One of the more clever monolouges is “Wedding Bells.” In this piece a girl worries about her mom’s feelings while attending her father’s remarriage: “She’s acting like she’s 100 percent okay with this. Just fine and dandy. But, I have this weird feeling that she is going to freak tomorrow, when she has to drop me off at the church. The SAME church that she and my dad were married in about 20 years ago!” This piece will allow some depth of emotion to emerge from any young actress, no matter what level of acting experience they may have.
The book was released in 2007, but the pieces are still very contemporary and are grounded in “real life” situations. Consider this book when the need to show emotion is part of assignment or there is a need for a 3-5 minute monologue.
The book retails for $11.95, but can be purchased at Amazon.com for $9.95.
