Prepping for the next race - a "normal abnormal" advantage
Today, Tuesday(many post today in order to catch-up), we ran the course in preparation for the June 7th race which has a grueling first mile elevation gain. Once again, I went to the reserves, my third lung, and easily managed the climb whereas the wife felt the burn and had to walk. Third lungs, I better take advantage of the "normal abnormality" as the doctor called it. Read Full Story
Sacrificed Long Run for the Home Team -- the CAVS
The day after the race, we were to run 18 miles. Although we promised each other an early morning run, we didn't manage to make it out to Lake Mary until a little after 9 a.m. Although I was feeling fine after 9 miles, the day was warm, sunny and beautiful and it seemed as if we were to waste it by running the final 9 -- besides, the Cavs were playing the Celtics in game 7 and I'm a die hard Cleveland fan who loves to be consistently disappointed by my hometown team. In the end, they... Read Full Story
Confilicted About My Race -- Always another day
Conflicted about my race results is the reason for my delay to post. Prior to the race start, Karen and I were speaking with the Councilman who inquired about my race goal. Although I explained I wanted to break "fifty", deep in my heart, I wanted to be within the 47 minute range as I thought I had prepared myself adequately for the pace and devised a plan to do so -- keep Bruce, a very strong runner, within eye-shot. Bruce was going to be my pace runner. Also, having raced on the course... Read Full Story
The Excitement Within
Last night I had concern about the early morning 5:30 a.m. alarm set by the wife when the race is 8 a.m. with a 7:30 a.m. late packet pick-up. Excited about the race but not too excited to wake-up at 5:30, my dog's "murphing" and "woofing" at 5:00 a.m. told me, "Let me out! The sun is up and so should you be!" I beat the alarm clock and now it is time to turn my attention to the race and hopefully come ahead of my age group pack or at least a majority of the them. A light Continental... Read Full Story
Vsions of Slightly Above Mediocrity
Due to increase mileage and, now, accompanied by commuting by bike to work, I may, just may, have over-extended myself which lead to my spell of congestion, body aches and a killer headache. Probably, sitting on the cold concrete garage floor in shorts and a t-shirt to install new fenders and a carrier rack on my bike didn't help either. Hence, I called in sick to catch-up on sleep and relax from an otherwise stressful work week. It just occurred to me that I haven't taken a sick day in... Read Full Story
Still here, just damn busy!
Three weeks into the new running program and the calendar posted upon our refrigerator is getting marked-up with more X's rather than frowny-faces. When a complete row of X's occur, we get to treat ourselves but after this past, full week-end of events, I don't know how we could treat ourselves. What could be possibly left to do? Thai food, movies, group run, long run, Ethnic festival, more movies, barbecue, drinks, shopping, gym, etc. In short, I've been sticking to the running program... Read Full Story
Panic Attack!
Sunday's long run wasn't necessarily long, just fourteen miles or just 7 laps around Buffalo Park. "Long runs" become defined as "long" after a eight-teen mile session and beyond. The first six miles were a nice, easy 9:40 pace, then I turned it up a notch and ran sub eights for the remaining eight miles where I became lost in the beat from the PodRunner download. Lost in the music, I was barely noticed the pace while focusing on keeping light feet and a quick turn-over. Strangely, it... Read Full Story
Pancake Breakfast!
"Do you think anyone will show? God, it would be pretty embarrassing if no one did." As we finished cleaning the house Friday night, we both had the same thoughts but the wife spoke first. I replied, "Well, a few of the people are on vacation or out of town. I'm not sure there will be many people coming for breakfast." Turning into the parking lot Saturday morning, only two cars were parked at Ft. Tuthill where this week's group run was scheduled on Soldier's Run -- one of my... Read Full Story
