I’m sure you know what it is like with a fractious hungry family? We went to the newly opened Swan Hotel Newby Bridge for dinner to be told that they were only serving residents from 5.00-9.00 pm!! Plan B turned out to be a winner, we decided to go to the Whitewater at Backbarrow which had also recently reopened after the floods last November. We were greeted by the Operations Manager James Beech who offered us exemplary service and a lovely table out on the terrace overlooking the river... Read Full Story

Photo courtesy of Joe Beaumont Behind the Lines (HVS 5a 33m) at Hodge Close Quarry is another climb that I seconded some time ago and have wanted to lead ever since. Being only my third ever 5a lead (the first was Endurance and the second kick Off ) I was a little bit psyched but determined to climb well. Dan from the Priestly Centre was again my climbing companion. We parked the car and looked over at the route which was being climbed by someone (who turned out to be Joe Beaumont), with... Every time I’m in the Coniston area I find myself gazing up at Dow Crag . Having seconded Murray’s Route a few years ago I’ve kept promising myself that I’d return to lead it; but a combination of poor weather, poor planning and a long walk in have kept me away. Read Full Story

Warmer weather is here and tomorrow I’m off for a days climbing on Dow Crag but first here’s a brief update on the outdoor climbing that I’ve done so far this year. Whitestones - seconded Cracked Wall (HS) and Moose (HS), all very straightforward. Stonestar - led a climb that had previously sandbagged me, but still struggled to find the hidden hold on Stonestar Groove (HS). Tilberthwaite Quarry - failed to top rope Big Tree Corner (E1) six weeks ago. Returned last night with Dan who led... Read Full Story

We don’t often highlight upcoming events on Discover The Lake District but make an exception for the forthcoming unveiling of the new Laurel and Hardy statue sculpted by Graham Ibbeson. One thing that I always do BEFORE I do business with anybody is initiate some form of low level contact. Maybe it’s via email requesting more information, perhaps it’s a phone call to ask a question, but whatever the contact method, the response (or often lack of response) helps me judge that company. If you’d like to chat to me about anything related to web design, building websites and more importantly, getting your online efforts to produce a profit, just email me at support(at...
