Pirate play box
My daughter attended the same pirate-themed birthday party as Chica recently. One of the gifts we bought the guest of honor was a tube full of plastic pirate figures. I went to wrap them in the pirate wrapping paper I had and noticed that the box I was about to use was too nice and cute to just wrap normally. The creative side of my brain started to kick in and before I knew it, I was gluing sand! I wanted the box to actually be part of the gift. I had a small, plain white box available... Read Full Story
Girl Scout project ideas
My sister and I were recently reminiscing about our days as Girl Scouts and talking about how her daughter would be old enough for Brownies soon. As we remembered all of our favorite projects and activities we did in Scouts, I realized that we’ve got quite a few projects here at ChicaAndJo.com that would lend themselves well to Girl Scout or Brownie troops looking for fun activities. So I’ve gathered a list of projects for troop leaders who might need some inspiration for their girls. Make... Read Full Story
Feature Friday - Recycle kid sweaters to make an elephant purse
Our new online friend Dot, over on Dabbled, has an adorable tutorial for making elephant purses out of kid sweaters. Chica and I love projects that recycle materials we would otherwise toss. She has lots of examples and gives great step-by-step instructions. I am going to have to fish out my daughter’s outgrown sweaters now. While you are there, be sure and check out her clever original art pieces featuring her robot friends. She has an online art portfolio as well where you can view her... Read Full Story
Eerie eyeball snacks for Halloween
One of my favorite creepy snacks to serve at a Halloween party is Eerie Eyeballs. I originally got the recipe from Britta Blvd and it’s a pretty easy one with great impact. I love seeing people (especially kids) squirm and squeal over these chewy, gummy, and freaky little bites! The trick to these is in the mold. My favorite mold is a simple plastic paint palette They are cheap, easy to store, and have a perfect round shape and a smooth, slick surface. Best of all, you can find them at... Read Full Story
Use Cricut to create stencils
I loved doing the freezer paper stenciling so much that I decided to try some more techniques for creating the stencil images. The best source I have for making really cute images of various sizes is my Cricut. Once I started looking at all of the designs I have available on my various cartridges, I was giddy with excitement over everything I could now stencil! First, I cut my freezer paper down to the 6″x12″ size required by my machine. Then, I picked a cute house off of my Cricut Joys of... Read Full Story
Make a pirate party invitation
A good friend recently threw a pirate-themed birthday party for her son. She was eager to have some really fun and unique invitations, and that’s exactly what I came up with for her. What says “pirate” more than a treasure map in an old bottle, right? These invitations were a lot of fun to make, and the kids even helped us with most of them. They were quite proud of the results and the party guests were thrilled to receive them. Here’s how to do it. Gather the supplies For the invitation... Read Full Story
Rummage and garage sale tips
A friend of mine is on a PTA board for a brand new school in our city. Since it is a new school, they need to do a lot of fund raising, in particular, for a playground. She had the great idea of hosting a community rummage sale at the school to not only raise money but help people recycle unwanted items. Her idea was great but she ran into the problem of implementation, that’s when she picked up the phone to call me. She proposed some specific questions to me for assistance since I have... Quick Tip - Label photo prints easily
Like most moms, I take and thus print lots of pictures of my toddler. I love to send the best prints to family and friends as often as I am able to find postage stamps in my house. Often though, I forget to write her name and the date the picture was taken on the back or I am just too lazy to do this twenty times. Unlabeled pictures cause problems a few years down the line when you can’t exactly remember which bald-headed baby is which! Oh, the embarrassment I have faced showing off a... Read Full Story
Remove permanent marker from a dry erase board
Dry erase boards are incredibly useful and handy in the home and office, as long as you remember to always use a dry erase marker on them. However, mistakes will happen, whether from uninformed children or absentminded adults, and eventually somebody will use a permanent marker on the whiteboard and ruin it. Oh but wait… it’s not ruined! You can actually remove permanent marker from a marker board with tools you already have. To show you how much I trust this technique, I’ve purposefully...
