Check out this review about the aforementioned 'Best Freelance Writing Book in the World' by Linda Jones. I'm a bit disappointed as I can't go to the launch now. Work schedule and all that...such are the pressures of freelance writing. I'm doing some interim PR work for the NHS at the moment and haven't been able to swap my day. The launch is in Birmingham and I was also going to go along to a GTC (General Teaching Council) hearing which is coincidentally taking place there during the day... Read Full Story

Linda Jones is an inspiring journalist/PR/blogger/all-round busy person based in the West Midlands. She runs several blogs about freelance writing and one about twins (she also has twin daughters! Makes you feel bad about complaining you're too busy doesn't it). Now she is also releasing a book called 'The Greatest Freelance Writing Tips in the World. Yes, she's also modest. The foreword is by Jan Murray of JournoBiz , a great networking website for journalists, PRs, and anyone interested in... Read Full Story

I went along to the launch of a new ideas development project which aims to 'meld the skills of Northern journalist and interactive designers' to develop content for innovative new media platforms last night. The launch was somewhat shrouded in mystery and not everything became clear at the launch but it's definitely an interesting concept. The idea is for journos, film makers and... Read Full Story

I was interviewed on the radio yesterday! I had arranged for one of my clients Steve Phillip, who runs a company called Empowering Women at Work , to appear on BBC Radio York. Steve was due to talk about what it is like to be a man who predominantly coaches women, ways women can become more assertive in the workplace etc. We'd run through a mock interview (even though he is a bit of a natural to be honest!) and everything was set. Then the producer asked him if any of the women he coached... Read Full Story

Do you fancy trying your hand at freelance writing? Susan Grossman, Lecturer in Journalism at City and Westminster universities, is running an intensive one-day workshop designed to help identify the best outlets for feature ideas, explore new markets, write succinct and compelling synopses, and approach editors with confidence. For those of us who already have some experience of freelance writing, she says she can help to double our earnings - not bad for £85! The workshop will be... Read Full Story
Why I am starting this blog

People often ask me what it is like to be a freelance writer. My reply always starts with err.... That is because being able to write for a living is great but it is difficult to sum up in a few words. I've decided to start this blog to talk about what I do, what other writers and PRs I know are doing, and to show some of my work. Writing for a new publication is always exciting and this week I have my first piece in the New Statesman magazine, about social care for the elderly. This is a... Read Full Story
