1973: The NCAA officially bans the use of anabolic steroids and begins urine testing that fall to combat the increasing overall drug use. Random testing for steroids and recreational drugs didn't begin until 1986 which largely came as a result of the death of Maryland basketball star Len Bias.

1983: The Space Shuttle Challenger STS-7 launches as Sally Ride becomes the first American woman in space.

618: In China, the Tang Dynasty founder Gāozǔ of Táng becomes Emperor. The Tang Dynasty ruled China for nearly 300 years.
1908: The University of the Philippines is established. It currently has the largest number of degree programs in the country.
1940: In the third of his three major speeches, Prime Minister of Britain Winston Churchill delivers the famous "Finest Hour" speech. This was inspiration for Great Britain as they prepared for the most dangerous phase in World War II.
1953: In Egypt, a Republic is declared and monarchy is abolished.
