PX, Alexandria, Virginia
Much has been written lately about slow cocktails and the growing mixology movement in DC and beyond. I have raved here about L2's cocktails and I've marveled at the creations of Anne at Rasika and Logan at Alto Plaza. But after being told so many times about the amazing drinks, bartenders, and overall experience, I have been dying to try PX in Old Town and finally had the chance this past week. PX lived up to its well deserved praise and is a completely different experience than you will... Read Full Story

Alto Plaza Opens in Centreville, Virginia
Centreville isn't exactly a culinary mecca. But this Virginia suburb is home to plenty of disposable income, with nowhere to spend it on a nice dinner and drink without having to drive towards the city. That is the opportunity that a group of investors saw when they conceived of and built Alto Plaza, a massive new restaurant at the intersection of Highways 28 and 29. That Guy at the Bar has visited Alto Plaza twice in the last couple of weeks, and is impressed with the vision of the... Read Full Story
How Many is Too Many?
I have a check up coming. I'm in good health and good shape, so I don't really expect any surprises. But there's that questionnaire I have to fill out in the lobby where I have to list all of my health issues, changes since the last check up, etc. The question I'm dreading? "How many alcoholic beverages do you consume each day?" I'm not going to reveal my answer here, but let's just say that if I use my fingers to count, I need both hands. And sometimes a foot. So, a little web... Read Full Story
Casa Noble Tequila Tasting at Oyamel
I was first introduced to Casa Noble tequila at Mi Cocina Mexican restaurant in NYC (which is one of my favorite spots for authentic Mexican food) a couple years ago. As a serious tequila lover and aspiring connoisseur, I was excited to learn that Oyamel was hosting Casa Noble for a free tequila tasting on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 25th and 26th in their butterfly bar. I met with Michael Finn, President of Sales for Casa Noble, at Oyamel and was excited to taste first the Crystal (or... Read Full Story
L2 Lounge, Georgetown
I'm not going to be able to write this without gushing like a school girl. I LOVE L2 Lounge. That Guy at the Bar has been to L2 three times over the last couple of weeks with different groups of friends, and every time the experience has been fantastic. L2 is a private drinking lounge, like you might expect to find in London or New York, located in Cady's Alley just off M Street in Georgetown. Membership fees begin at $1,500, though $30/person will get you in on the weekends. Yes... Read Full Story

"anything with an ounce of absinthe in it comes on like a bucket full of knuckles..."
I laughed when I read that line on Paul Clarke's Cocktail Chronicles, one of my favorite blogs. I have been curious about Absinthe and eager to try it for quite some time. Enter L2 Lounge, about which I will write much more soon. With an alcohol content averaging around 75% (150 Proof) it really does pack a punch. And, the taste....well, it's not for everyone, but, I gotta say, I have a a fondness for the "Green Fairy". Absinthe is typically served in a glass and chilled water is... Read Full Story
Flemings in Tysons Corner, VA
Fleming's Prime Steakhouse and Winebar in Tysons Corner, Virginia is a largely undiscovered treasure. There are plenty of steak restaurants in the area, all serving about the same quality and price of steak. What sets Flemings apart for me is the bar experience, which makes it a great place to meet friends after work. First of all, Flemings has a long appetizer list and all are good. There are the usual Fried Calamari and Shrimp Cocktail choices, but the Cheese Plate, Beef Tenderloin... Read Full Story
