Christmas Tree Is Up

I miss our old Christmas Tree. It was our first tree together. It was starting to show the signs of age and the wear and tear became obvious. Still, I was sad. After Christmas last year we took all the ornaments off and Lori took the tree to the curb by our trash bins. I had taken a few pictures of the tree still decorated. This year I even had an ornament made from Kodak Gallery with the picture of our old tree. It now hangs on our new tree.

Lori had called me from work shortly after Christmas last year. She was excited that she had found the perfect Christmas tree to replace the old one. With the after Christmas sales in full swing, we got a killer deal on it. The tree was normally $499.00 but we bought it for $25.00. I couldn't complain. Even though I was sad that we had to replace our old tree, I was excited that we got such a great deal.

She brought it home and we lugged the box upstairs to the spare room. The enormous box sat in the corner all year until last Sunday. Yes, it was November 1st and that means one thing in this household...time to decorate for Christmas. Although we're not putting decorations up this year due to the move, we agreed that we would at least put the tree up.

Lori took it out of the box. I was stunned at how wide it was. She fluffed the branches, tested the lights and put the second piece on. The only thing I could say was, "Is there a third piece to that?" With only having the two pieces put on the tree it was already taller than our old tree. Lori just laughed and said there was one piece left. I joked and asked if we would need to cut a hole in the ceiling for it to fit. She continued to fluff out the branches and laugh.

The third piece went on and I cringed. Right then I knew that there would be no room for our much beloved tree topper. Once the third piece was secure I looked at the top branch. It's about 5 inches away from hitting the ceiling. I just shook my head as Lori laughed hysterically and hooked the lights up...all 1,000 of them.

It's a beautiful tree, I'll admit. It's a gorgeous 8 foot Aspen Spruce and the branches look identical to the real Christmas trees I had grown up with. The lights are white, my favorite. Lori wanted to add strands of colored lights, but I didn't feel like buying a pair of shades to protect my eyes from the bright rays. The tree already lights up both rooms better than if we had all of our 7 lamps on. We compromised. No colored lights in exchange for her putting in the red bulbs to make them blink.

And so our tree sits fully decorated in the living room. It's too big to put in the corner so it sits in front of the window. Last year we had too many ornaments for our old tree. This year I'm thinking we could use a few more to fill in the spaces. It's that big. The Kodak ornament with a picture of our old tree is displayed in the front. Although I still miss it, I'm kinda liking this new one.
