A number of my clients  have recently needed to quickly upload a document for their readers to download, nothing startling, just day to day documents.  I also needed to play around with a couple of new tools so I have put together a quick post on how to do just that.  It’s fairly long with [...] How To Upload A Document For Download is a post from: flaminglacers mutterings Read Full Story

Social media is an important part of our lives, both personal and professional, you can’t get away from it. How often do you hear people of all generations saying ‘I facebooked it’ or ‘tweeted them’ (never ‘twitted’ … please). Social media has to be a major element of your business marketing plan, whether your business [...] On Social Media – Signal v Noise is a post from: flaminglacers mutterings Read Full Story

Following on from my last post about what I’ve been up to for the last few months, one of the things I said I had been doing was a lot of thinking.  Much of that thinking was about the state of the world around us, where I want to go with my business not to [...] Moving Forward is a post from: flaminglacers mutterings Read Full Story

If you are one of those who has been wondering about my uncharacteristic silence over the last few months, thank you for your concern and your time of respite is over! Flaminglacer is back and has a lot to say…. I have spent the last few months working on an offline project, almost harking back to a previous life before the days of the interweb. Whilst there will be an online element as there are few businesses that can survive without that, this is very much a real world project which has... Read Full Story

Good tools are one of the most important things a craftsman needs, and it doesn’t matter what industry you work in, that holds true.  Just occasionally you come across something that is so good and so simple you can’t quite believe it works as well as it does. It’s a well known fact that I am just a touch OCD about lists and time management and so forth, so you can imagine my utter joy when I came across a tool that simplifies that process without leaving me feeling itchy about it.  Feeling... My Office Is working in your PJ’s such a good thing? It is often sold as one of the advantages of working online by the self-styled gurus.   The question came up because I have made some fairly dramatic changes in my working life, one of the results was a new and bigger home office and a shifted work focus, and a thought process that led me to dwell on that question. It comes down to one simple thing, your chances of success if ‘working in your Jammies’ is your attitude to work... Read Full Story
An Open Letter To Tesco

Dear Mr Tesco, A few weeks ago you sold me a Laser Printer, a Samsung CLP-320 Series which you were pushing as a really good deal, and a very good printer. You were absolutely right. It was a very good deal, and it is a very good printer. I am delighted with it. The nature of printers is that they are used to print things. In the case of my printer, it prints a lot, which is why I bought this particular printer. When laser printers print, the nature of the beast is that they run out of... Read Full Story

We know everything, don’t we – those of us who have been in this game for years – then you discover you don’t.  Sometimes that discovery makes you feel a fool, sometimes it gives you great joy – that was what happened to me today.   Most people probably know about this – but I didn’t, my delight may be tempered by a slight feeling of foolishness when I discover that everyone did know about it.   It was also a useful lesson in not assuming anything. Gathering information is one of the things... Read Full Story
Practice What You Preach

I did a stupid thing yesterday.  I didn’t practice what I preach.  What did I do?  Very, very foolishly I edited a file on one of my sites on the server.  How stupid is that?  I have lost count of the number of times I have railed at people for being so silly and then I go and do it myself.  It is one of the stupidest things to do and I paid the price as I was greeted with a completely blank  screen.  Couldn’t get into the backend, site disappeared.  Phrases like ‘Oh flip’ and ‘Botheration...
