2009: The Obama administration announced today that it will seek to reverse a Bush-era mercury pollution control plan that allowed for mercury hot-spots around certain polluting power plants. That plan had been favored by industry but earned the protests of those concerned with mercury’s impact on human health. Power plants are the largest source of mercury pollution. President Obama signs the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act into law. Prior to this, employers could get away with illegal pay discrimination by simply keeping the discrimination secret from the employee for a short period of time, after which the employee could take no action. President Obama tells the EPA to reconsider a Bush decision that stopped California and other states from imposing their own stricter auto emission limits (which would reduce dependence on foreign oil, aid in the fight against global warming, and produce cleaner air). The Obama administration today overturned the Bush administration’s “global gag rule” that had prevented organizations that include abortion advice as part of their family planning services from receiving US funds. Now such organizations will be free to expain all legal options to their clients.
