Woman Nearly Died after Dyeing her Hair
A young woman in England was rushed to the hospital with agonizing burns following an extreme reaction to a home hair dye kit. Zoe Vernon, 22, was told by the doctors she had some of the worst allergic reaction they had ever seen caused by hair dye. The poor girl said she had dyed her hair previously but nothing could predict such a disaster. Before using the dye, namely a Boots Permanent Colour kit, she said she performed an allergy patch test and had no allergic reaction. The morning after... Read Full Story
Oribe Hair Products: a Glance over the Shoulder
Space NK, our Brit version of Sephora, is one tricky store. Whenever I stroll into their cute tempting space, I end up buying not what I wanted. Today, I didn’t even want to buy anything. Space NK launched a so-called natural line, and the store girl assured me it’s “free from all nasties” - of course it was, it depends on what “nasties” mean to Space NK and what “nasties” mean to reputable dermatological institutions. Anyway, the line, as cute ... Read Full Story
UPDATE: Disappointed by Nutriganics (The Body Shop)
After 2 days of using skincare products by Nutriganics (The Body Shop) I am utterly disappointed. Let’s begin with the better products. The mask is OK. For the clay mask, it dries to invisibility which is weird. Normally, clay masks dry to bright white/gray/yellow/pink. This mask dried and became invisible. Lookes unusual, weird, but all right - for someone who was raised on Queen Helen Mint Julep, I am not really picky. Nutriganic clay mask left my skin clean-pored (what else did you e... Nutriganics by The Body Shop: Not Everything Organic is Truly Green
I was very excited to learn about the new Nutriganics line by The Body Shop. Touted as the first certified organic (at least in the UK) line of cleanser, toner, day and night moisturizers, serum, and eye cream, the line looks quite green, and the ingredients are quite decent. However, when I checked the Body Shop.com, the line appeared to be not available for purchase in California and there was nowhere mentioned that it’s certified organic. A closer inspection of the ingredients list... Read Full Story
Estrogen Supplementation does not Prevent Skin Aging
For many women, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can alleviate the physical symptoms of menopause, But many also look for another benefit of HRT. Many women noticed a marked improvement in their skin’s appearance while on HRT. However, dermatologists maintain that estrogen does not aid in skin rejuvenation of photodamaged skin. And the potential risks of estrogen supplementation when used long-term outweigh any potential skin benefits. “It does not appear that topical or oral ... Read Full Story
Clinique Lipsticks are now Paraben-Free?
Clinique lipstick
Apparently they are. A few days ago I’ve been lured to Clinique counter by a clever promotion that promised an airport-security friendly makeup bag with mini clippers, hair brushes, and other cute travel accessories. Just out of a sheer curiosity (and to earn the bag!) I made an honest attempt to choose a Clinique lippie. To my surprise, Clinique lipsticks are not as horrible as Estee Lauder or YSL sisters. They are COMPLETELY PARABEN-FREE, to begin with. Many are free from aluminum. An... Read Full Story
Lead in Lipsticks: FDA Study Found even Higher Levels of Toxic Metal
Popular lipsticks contain massive levels of lead, found the new study by FDA - and these levels are even higher than those reported in 2007 by the consumer advocacy group Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. This new analysis, conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, used a technology called “inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry” to assess lead levels in 22 different lipsticks, all in shades of red. FDA does have authority to regulate color additives in cosmetics, but n... Read Full Story
Acne Serum Recipe: Tested on Myself, Works Great
My pre-pregnancy nightmare is coming back. It’s not a really full-blown acne, but it’s bad enough to peek from underneath the mineral makeup and it’s inflamed enough to make me reach for the old time-tested acne fighters: the Skinsaver Wash (I was too proud to reach for the Petite Marie Organics products, so I made a cleanser myself in the lab today), and a blend of essential oils in the base of argan and thistle oils which are excellent for oily skin. The blend worked so we... Read Full Story
The War of the Nudes: Nude Skincare vs. Stella Nude!
Things are getting litigious on green skincare front. Stella Nude by Stella McCartney, a new fragrance to be released later this year, has come under fire from Nude Skincare founded by Bono’s wife, Ali Hewson. I’ve been watching the case development with great interest. First of all because I am a huge fan of Stella McCartney and her dedication to all things green. Her skincare line CARE is so pure, you can eat it as a health supplement. Not a single synthetic ingredient in sight. Secondly b... Read Full Story
