Photo from Cinema.comThe term "experimental film" can refer to many things. It can mean a collage of images thrown together to try and invoke a reaction, or it can be a filmmaker's stab at telling a story not often told. Few avant-garde pictures like these are as deeply unsettling and boundary-breaking as In the Realm of the Senses (also known as Empire of Senses, or L'empire des sens), a work of true water-testing from acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Nagisa Oshima. We get it, Hollywood. We're all connected. I've talked to someone who has talked to someone who may've had a conversation with the Pope. But, seriously, do they all have to be huffy, excruciatingly overexposed melodramas? Powder Blue could possibly be good, if Forest Whitaker and Ray Liotta have anything to say about it. If not, then it'll be Crash by way of I Know Who Killed Me, a wobbly flick constructed around an it-girl (Jessica Biel) playing a stripper. Then again, ... Read Full Story
Every great director has at least one departure from their film-making blueprint, an entry in their portfolio that diverts from the tones and formulas that have worked for them up until that point. This seems especially prevalent in English language directors and their drive to build a "mainstream" picture: Martin Scorsese has The Color of Money, Billy Wilder has The Fortune Cookie, and Alfred Hitchcock has To Catch a Thief. Even in their lighter fare, these directors still showca... Read Full Story
Big surprise, I know, but I'm unbearably stoked for the Korean director's next film. Just the statement "From the Director of Oldboy and Lady Vengeance comes a Vampire Movie" has a potent ring to it. The true testament to devotion to the director lies in his venture into comedy, I'm a Cyborg, a film that I enjoyed even despite the high-pitched tones that the overwhelmingly dark director tried to work with in his first outing outside of the Vengeance Trilogy. Yeah, you... Read Full Story
Daniel Skubal, a great director of photography out of Indiana and an acquaintance of mine, put together this really solid short film about a street hustler (Rufus Burns) that attempts to rob a blind man (Hank Fincken) -- only to reveal some harsh realities that he really didn't want to unearth. It's a great showcase for both actors' talents, as well as a testament to well-written dialogue and proper usage of sepia-stained visual design. You can follow Daniel Skubal on Twitter at... So, you're given the choice between directing a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie or adapting one of the gaming world's most enthralling stories ever. Which one do you choose? The answer's simple, and one that Gore Verbinski very easily dove towards. Variety reports that the Pirates and Weather Man director will be diving away from Disney's cash cow franchise to concentrate on engulfing himself in 2K Games' seminal narrative. Bioshock isn't your normal video gam... Read Full Story
Antoine (Jean Rochefort), our lead character in The Hairdresser's Husband (Le Mari de la Coiffeuse), has a fetish for large-breasted women that want to take his money and cut off his hair. Taken in the wrong context, some might see that as a phobia instead of a desire. Instead, I think you'd find that many more guys share a similar fondness to Antoine's situation, a desire built from a young boy's perversely entrancing summer filled with repeat visits to a female-owned barbe... It's pretty much the same Brothers Bloom trailer that's been hovering around since last year -- only tweaked a bit to include quotes from critics and award badges. All the same, it's highly exciting. Read Full Story

Not much of a "collectibles" type of guy, but the price was (obviously) right -- plus, the dormant Star Wars geek inside of me got to escape for a little while after this purchase.Blockbuster was running a killer sidewalk style sale, where they had a lot of their memorabilia, t-shirts, and other jazzy stuff like board games and candy for really inexpensive prices. Along with picking up a copy of the Italian version of The Last Kiss -- an interesting coincidence since I recently rev... Read Full Story
