I am not a Tory but….
I am not a Tory, but I feel uneasy when a Government Cabinet Minister Geoff (this and every year’s labour patsy) Hoon accuses the Tories of “undermining democracy” by using money donated by Lord Ashcroft (Tory Deputy Chairman) to target marginal constituencies. This is not currently illegal, the amount spent per constituency is only capped during the election period. The implication is that the Government is considering introducing legislation to cap spend between elections - the Sour Grapes Act 2007.
At least its Ashcroft’s own dosh thats being spent on his personal choice of political parties. The same can not be said of the heaps of money the Labour party gets handed by the Union (contributed by its members who have no say in its disbursement).
I am not a conspiracy theorist by inclination, but am I alone in thinking this musing by Hoon comes suspiciously hot on the heels of a court decision to over turn a will left by a Tory supporter who wanted his money to go to his party?
The botton line is that Geoff Hoon statement seems to imply that the government may use its powers to squash a rival political party. Now that would be “undermining democracy.”
