I had the opportunity recently to travel by car across the United States, literally from coast to coast. Upon embarking on this journey, I had the idea that, along the way, I might find some place preferable to the Pacific Northwest to live, some place that suited me better. Almost eight thousand miles later, I discovered that this enchanted forest delights my sensibilities like nowhere else I've been or seen. And then I realized, Robin's Woods is not just the name of a blog, it's a real... Read Full Story

It was a beautiful summer day, and Deception Pass Bridge was the destination. Trouble was, half the state of Washington seemed to have the same idea. Funny thing was, everyone else was up on the bridge; I had down below all to myself :) Read Full Story

In a rare and fleeting moment the other evening, the sunlight broke through the canopy of the forest and there was a perfect sunburst just above and to the right of the road through the woods. I was there to see it, but by the time I got my camera out and set up, it was already too late for anything but a fading memory. Several years back, I did a lighting experiment. Made a light tent out of white ripstop, (they weren't so easy to buy at that time!) and proceeded to photograph flowers. I had seen this technique used on a much larger scale with people, but I wanted to try it with something smaller. My goal was a perfectly lit flower with a pure white background. Some of my test shots worked just like I had intended, and I went on to shoot a few portraits using the same technique. I never quite mastered... Read Full Story

My career in photography started out many years ago in a high end studio where I took beautiful, formal portraits of people, mainly babies and children, and I absolutely loved that environment. Lights, props, backdrops -- all the bells and whistles a photographer could dream of. I was happy, but vaguely unfulfilled. Then I started taking portraits of flowers and animals outside, in less controlled conditions, experimenting with natural light, and found that while I enjoyed it more than... Read Full Story

I'll admit it. I'm a Photoshop addict. I've always preferred a natural look to my pictures, but have no qualms about using whatever techniques are necessary to achieve that goal. HDR photography is becoming overwhelmingly popular, and while I love, love, love the look, I have resisted using the technique for any but the most basic of manipulations . Well, I give. Spurred on by the discovery of some indispensable software called Topaz (Topaz is my birthstone. I love little signs like that... Read Full Story
