Yay gay marriage.

I made the "mistake" of expressing my happiness/hopefulness regarding the fifth anniversary of the ruling in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health. If you're too lazy to click through, this threw open the doors to allow same-sex marriage in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The "mistake" I made was expressing this on Facebook, which is only marginally less socially retarded than MySpace. Immediately one of my hyper-religious cousins piped in: the Catholic Church says marriage is between a man and a woman and blah blah blah. I sighed heavily, thought before I typed (restraint of pen and tongue, after all, also applies to one's keyboard), and allowed that while she was certainly entitled to her OPINION, my status update was not an invitation for her (or anyone else for that matter) to argue. But argue people did, and so I took it down.

I am no more into listening to anti-religious rants than I am religious ones. It's just the way I'm wired. I was trying to quietly celebrate the fact that my friends and family members -- decent, hard-working, tax-paying folks all -- have the same rights the rest of us do, if only in a couple of states for the time being. I'm all for intelligent debate, but there tends to be no such thing on 98% of the internet, where it's rather like refereeing a pissing contest for the incontinent. Demonization, not dialogue.

So I'm posting it here. Yay gay marriage. That's it. That's all. No "the bible says this" or "show me where the bible says that." Thanks.
