Censored words behind the Chinese Firewall
I have added terms in English, simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese to the news tracker, in order to get readily available news and to find the most relevant dialogue. Some of these terms I've pulled directly from words that are seen as threatening to the stability of the Chinese government. I've also selected rss feeds from independent Chinese-language and/or bilingual news sources. To see the wikipedia article on blocked words behind the Chinese firewall, follow this link: http://en... Riding a cab in Beijing can become a lesson in popular understandings of the relationship between politics and national pride
/16/2008 0:41 GMT Beijing people, or Beijingren (北京人) are known throughout the Mainland as talkers, among other things. The stereotype of the Beijing native doesn't differ far from that of the New Yorker. Perhaps because of long hours and the most intense grid-lock I've ever encountered, taxi drivers often are these "talkers", passing the time by chatting on a diverse set of topics with their passengers. Thus, in the last two and half years, some of the deepest conversations I've ever had... Read Full Story

"Not You! You!!!" Column By Uri Avnery in Wake of Tibetan Demonstrations
"Not You! You!!!" by Uri Avnery 05/04/08 "Hey! Take your hands off me! Not you! You!!!" - the voice of a young woman in the darkened cinema, an old joke. "Hey! Take your hands off Tibet!" the international chorus is crying out, "But not from Chechnya! Not from the Basque homeland! And certainly not from Palestine!" And that is not a joke. CCP officials claimed he died of a hungry... Read Full Story
Gulja Massacre: What it was and how it relates to Tibetan Independence...
In the wake of the surprisingly strong international outcry against the recent local demonstrations and brutal government repressions in Tibet, it seems increasingly important to me that the international community make efforts to greater understand the complexity of the terrorities that make up what is understood as China. The historical political and cultural distinctions in the entire Northwest of China, known as the Xinjiang Uigher Autonomous region to the Chinese government and East... Read Full Story
del.icio.us project
For my digital media activism class, students were paired off into groups to begin learning how to use tagging technology online. This was our assignment: "Assignment: Use del.icio.us for tagging web sites.. Tag 30 items: 15 of your own choice, related either to course readings or to your Zimbio page. Try to use it as a way to track items as they come up in the course of the project or to issues that are related to the readings or that you think would be of general interest." I worked...
