MahJong Room, Surry Hills
MGS has wanted to visit this place for a while. Not because she particularly likes MahJong, although she has played a game or two in her time, but because the name has a funky ring to it, the rooms have some rather funky decor and the food has a reputation. So on Saturday night, she went. It was a party of 5. MGS and her crew sat upstairs. If you go, request a seat there; the room is slightly sassier, the ambiance slightly more sophisticated. Just don't slip on your way back down! Our wait... Read Full Story
Maya Sweets, Surry Hills
MGS thinks this place on Cleveland St is da bomb for a cheap Indian feed.MGS stopped by Maya Sweets for a snack after visiting Indian spice shops 'round the corner on Crown. These places are a treat - all brimming with cheap seeds and spices and blaring Bollywood beats out onto the street.Check out the Rawa Masala Dosa below. This was a massive beast of a dosa, stuffed with potato, onion and spice and served with coconut chutney and sambar. It was massive but delicious and so cheap at $8.... Read Full Story
Sea Bay Restaurant
MGS likes Northern Chinese food (OK.... it's fairly obvious by now that MGS is an Asian food freak. But keep tuning in, she likes everything else too. Just not banana.)MGS thinks Sea Bay Restaurant does the best Northern style Chinese dumplings this side of Beijing. They do the best in Sydney anyway. It's a small, walk-too-fast-and-you'll-miss-it kind of place. But don't miss it! It's so good that once inside you'll be squeezed to find a seat at lunch time unless you co... Read Full Story
Spicy Sichuan at Red Chilli
MGS likes spicy Sichuan cuisine in a BIG way. Sichuan cuisine comes from Sichuan province in Western China.... the food's got a lotta chilis in it (prolly to hide the taste of rank meat in the old days).MGS knows Melbourne has some hoppin' Sichuan restaurants... check out Spicy Fish and Dainty Sichuan Noodles when next in that southern city... For Sydney though, MGS likes Red Chili! It's TOP. (just remember that when the waiter plonks the Tea Pot down on your table, the tea ain... Read Full Story
Sailors Thai Canteen, The Rocks, Sydney
MGS returns from Thailand and heads straight for Thai tastes in The Rocks. Sailors Thai Canteen, the mid-range (but actually a bit exxy) diner upstairs from David Thompson's renowned (and more exxy) Sailors Thai Restaurant, has a reputation...all good.MGS thinks pretty good. MGS suspects taste buds were spoiled during latest visit to land of smiles. She thought the dishes a tad heavy on the palm sugar and too light on the spice.BUT: the table settings DID include condiments Thai-style: ch... Read Full Story
Back from Thailand
MGS just became MGT (Melbourne Girl in Thailand). She ate some amazing food. Check out some of the best:Below: Spicy crab and grilled fish from Chao Ley restaurant in Hua Hin... simple fish done beautifully; stuffed with kaffir lime, lemongrass and pepper. The crab was to die for - cooked with a mixture of galangal, garlic, lemongrass and chili, it had a Sichuan flavour. Fab.Below: Fried Pomfret Fish with Mixed Spicy - also from Chao Ley - spicy green peppercorns, red and green chili peppers,... Read Full Story
9 months in...
It’s September. I’ve been in Sydney nine months and this is my first post. I’m a Melbourne girl. We’re snobs when it comes to our food. No offence, but words and phrases that come to mind when putting a Melbourne perspective on the Sydney food scene follow thus: disappointing, deconstructed, overpriced, understaffed, neon & fluoro, discothèque eating, style over substance, exxy, dull, hard to find, not as good as ours. We’re competitive, yes. But a few months in Sydney has changed my opin... Read Full Story
