Life is too short
6 weeks ago my Uncle died after a long illness. We had plenty of contact with the Health services and some time in the future, when I’m a little less raw, I may use these experiences to show what works and does not work in successful career development.
Last week, another Uncle died very suddenly whilst away enjoying himself.
At the same time, word came through that the Dad of good friends of ours had gone missing whilst out hill walking. Two, very long days later he was found dead. It was reported as “pensioner…..”
I hate these “shorthand” labels which we’re so quick to put on people- even though I do it myself.
They don’t reflect the richness and variety of people’s lives. This man lectured on a part time basis, his students rating him highly on “rate my teacher”. He had just finished a Phd, had an active social and family life and it was always enjoyable and interesting to talk to him.
What these events bring home to me, is that we need to make the most of our lives. Doing a job which we really hate or occupies every waking moment of our lives is not a good way to live. See previous post on this
The other thing that came home to me, is how much little gestures count at this time. It really made a difference that people made the effort to ring, or send a card or simply listened. So if you know some one who has been recently bereaved, you can and do help simply by listening, calling or writing to that person.
Normal blogging will resume in about 10 days.
Take care.
