NYBD on WGBB Tonight at 10pm
Hear another edition of NYBD on WGBB as we continue our spot in the Sports Radio NY rotation. Comedian Matt Iseman headlines the show. Back in October of 2008 I participated in a roundtable with Matt to kick off his show Sports Soup on Versus. Recently Iseman had a part in the movie Transformer’s 2 as well as a continued role on the Style Network’s show Clean House. This should be a chance for us at NYBD to “let our hair down” and have some fun. Former San Diego Padres... Read Full Story
Bong Hit on Mike’d Up?
Courtesy of Tirico Suave and Deadspin. Apparently a caller to Mike Francesa’s show decided to take a bong hit while talking about his Yankees offseason plan. Maybe that is why the caller is the only one supporting a four year deal for Johnny Damon. Disclaimer: We don’t actually know if this is a real bong hit and we are not reporting it as such. Just passing along a funny video. Francesa, who sees himself as a movie critic in his spare time, also weighs in on the new Sandra Bulloc... Read Full Story
Hot Stove Sunday Tonight @7pm
Howard Megdal of SNY joins me in his usual Sunday night spot as we talk about the latest from the Hot Stove. We will kick off the show discussing the NY Cy Young Award controversy with ESPN’s Keith Law and Will Carroll of BP. I also want Howard’s take on collusion and the statements made by Scott Boras, Bud Selig, and Rob Manfred. We also will chat about latest entrant in the Roy Halladay sweepstakes (the Dodgers) and if they are now the favorites to land the Toronto ace with a de... Read Full Story
Why Some in Industry Believe Collusion Claims
On Friday I gave my thoughts on potential collusion claims against MLB owners. Bud Selig has gone on record saying that some clubs lost money in 2009 which, coupled with a seven percent drop in attendance, should give owners reason to scale back this offseason. I historically defend the owners over the players when it comes to collusion since I believe MLBPA tends to believe big salaries are a birthright regardless of the economic health of the game. I realize what happened in the eighties, b... Read Full Story
Dodgers Could Be Stiffest Competition for Yanks
It appears it’s only a matter of time that Roy Halladay will be traded. Earlier in the week it was confirmed the Yankees reached out to Toronto to let their interest be known. This weekend there were reports of interest from the Dodgers and Cubs. It’s Los Angeles that should concern the Yankees the most. I spoke with Frank Russo (who will appear on WGBB with me tonight at 10pm). Frank told me that some in the Yankees organization have doubts about how serious Toronto is dealing Ha... Read Full Story
Mets Finally Embrace History at Citi Field
The Mets just announced their plans to address the lack of history at Citi Field. First they will rename areas of the ballpark after Tom Seaver, Casey Stengel, Gil Hodges, and Bill Shea. There will be a Hall of Fame committee which will have members of the media and team voting on future inductees into a new Mets Hall of Fame. Some members of the committee are Howie Rose, Gary Cohen, Marty Noble, Jay Horwitz, and former Mets pitcher Al Jackson. The Hall of Fame will be adjacent to the Jackie ... Read Full Story
Concerns About Millwood’s Durability
Although it appears unlikely the rumored three way deal between the Mets, Rangers, and Cubs will go down I decided to look into Kevin Millwood a bit. Howard did a great job of breaking down the reasons to like Millwood yesterday. I would support, even encourage, such a deal since it would free the Mets of Castillo and bring in a solid veteran starter to New York. Today, after receiving information, I now have reservations. One scout told NYBD that some in the Texas organization have concerns ... Read Full Story
What About Kroenke?
The Yankees announced seven additions to their 40 man roster yesterday. The one surprise for me was the exclusion of Zach Kroenke. Last December Kroenke was selected by the Florida Marlins in the Rule V draft. He got very little playing time in spring training, and when he played was ineffective, and was offered back to the Yankees. Kroenke had a great year for the Scranton Yankees limited opponents to the .213 BAA and a 1.99 ERA. He has struggled in the AFL giving up 10 runs in 15 innings, b... Read Full Story
Thoughts on Simmons and ESPN
You know that I don’t trust most big corporations and executives. For years sports fans were dealt information they deemed necessary rather than giving us all the information to make an educated choice. In politics you have seen conservative and liberal talk shows work to expose inaccuracies in media, however sports always was unable to break through until the age of information. ESPN has recently been in hot water thanks to former Mets GM Steve Phillips. I mentioned a book called ̶... Read Full Story
Josh Johnson Could be Avaliable
According to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com, the Marlins and Josh Johnson have been unable to reach a contract extension, that could force the Marlins deal him before he becomes a free agent in 2011. All the way back on October 22, I wrote a post on SevenTraintoShea.com, saying that Johnson could be available. Here is that post: A couple of weeks ago during a press conference addressing the Mets awful season, Omar Minaya said he will explore the trade route in order to improve the club. The Mets ...
