A little over a week ago I talked about how Brandon Tierney executes a show that is a great template for sports talk. Tomorrow, when you return to your regular AM morning listening, you will hear what’s wrong with sports talk. The air waves will be littered with none other than the narcissistic, selfish, and ignorant Craig Carton. Right before the “king of bad sports talk” went on vacation this story came out. It’s a familiar scenario we have see: Craig Carton gets big name guest, Carton inte... Read Full Story

Howard joins me tonight at 8pm for the latest edition of the Weekly Digest.
We will recap the series in Philadelphia and discuss the Mets sloppy play on defense. With the recent report of Tony Bernazard’s continued meddling is management greasing the skids for a fruitless summer? When will it be time to wave the white flag?
The Yankees are flying high and on the verge of hitting another season benchmark: 15 games over .500. The emergence of the bullpen may just have put them on even gro... Read Full Story

- We talked about Austin Jackson (named to IL All Star team this week) on a recent show. I mentioned the lack of power he has displayed at AAA, but over the last 10 games he has hit 2 homers.
- Shelley Duncan expressed frustration with this article. I think Shelley has done enough that he deserves another chance at the big league level. I like how he said that a scout could assess the outside, but not the inside. When it comes to dealing with Shelley, I can attest, he is an All Star.

Yesterday, Bill Madden reported on the Mets current woes. Aside from the usual conversation (shallow lineup, barren farm system, Jerry Manuel’s post game quotes) he brings up that meddlesome name again: Tony Bernazard.
It appears that Bernanzard, as he did during the Randolph regime, has a lot to say about Manuel’s performance during organizational meetings. The Wilpon’s eagerly take Bernazard’s information and react accordingly. Don’t forget that it was Bernaza... Read Full Story

- The Yankees fought back and came from behind for the 24th time this year. The baseball season is about hitting benchmarks, 5 games over, 10 games, over, 20 games over and beyond. They are on pace to win about 95 games and should be 15 games over this week. The elevator is going up in the Bronx.
- The Mets continue to shoot themselves in the foot. I go back to my WGBB show in early June where I said this team could survive the brutal 32 games stretch leading up to the All Star break if they ... Read Full Story

The injury to Chien Ming Wang concerns me because of what impact it will have on the bullpen. Despite what all the prognosticators on this site claim, modern day baseball is won in the 7th, 8th, and 9th inning. The Yankees bullpen, led by Coke, Bruney, and Phil Hughes, was starting to round into top shape. So much so that I thought you might not need to overpay for a setup man like Chad Qualls or Huston Street. Losing Wang to injury should not mean a return to the rotation for Phil Hughes. Th... Bill Simmons brings up the Mets/Pre 2004 Red Sox comparison on his podcast.
I believe there is much validity to this point. The Red Sox were defined by bad losses, poor luck, and fan paranoia. This is exactly the Mets and their fans over the last two decades. When did it start? I agree with Simmons and point to the Mike Scioscia homer in 1988. That destroyed any chance of an eighties Mets dynasty. Look at what Mets fans have had thrown at them since then:

- Those guys who were umpiring in the stands at Yankee Stadium couldn’t have done any worse than what we have seen this year.
- The Mets/Phils game is one of those games you kick out before 8:30 PM and find something more productive to do.
- The Phil’s (Hughes and Coke) have really stabilized this bullpen. In last 7 apps, Hughes has pitched a CG SHO: 9IP, 4 Hs, 1 BB, and 10Ks. Coke has been un-scored upon on in 15 of last 16 outings (0.66 ERA) Who needs Huston Street?

ESPN has a great piece about Lou Gehrig’s final letters. Hear clips of his final speech and read his letters to his doctor throughout the ordeal. Gehrig was only 37 years old when he passed away from ALS.
MLB will honor Gehrig’s infamous speech at every ballpark this 4th of July. Read Full Story

Much of the focus over the offensive woes of the Mets has centered around the three bats of Carlos Delgado, Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran, and justifiably so. The Mets wouldn’t have approached 800 runs scored last season without huge contributions from all three of these stars, and the Mets miss them terribly.
However, the offense has struggled more than could even be expected with these three out, and that is due to what had been an utter collapse in the secondary bats of Fernando Tati... Read Full Story
