Mets Are the New Red Sox?
Bill Simmons brings up the Mets/Pre 2004 Red Sox comparison on his podcast.
I believe there is much validity to this point. The Red Sox were defined by bad losses, poor luck, and fan paranoia. This is exactly the Mets and their fans over the last two decades. When did it start? I agree with Simmons and point to the Mike Scioscia homer in 1988. That destroyed any chance of an eighties Mets dynasty. Look at what Mets fans have had thrown at them since then:
- The fall of two sure Hall of Fame athletes in Darryl Strawberry and Doc Gooden
- The Worst Team Money Can Buy
- Generation K
- 2000 Subway Series loss to the Yankees that culminated the Bobby Valentine era. Meanwhile having to live through the Yankees dynasty.
- Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS against St. Louis
- September of 2007 and 2008. Add in the wretched Phillies winning a title in 08′
Perhaps the Mets sold their soul to win Game 6 in 1986. That would be appropriate since it was the Red Sox on the losing end of that scenario. Obviously the Mets fan has become more paranoid over the years and waits for the roof to cave in on their head. Maybe that bad karma and energy has something to do with it as well.
I will be examining this on Tuesday with an interesting show planned. Stay tuned for details later in the weekend. Enjoy your 4th of July!
