Last request for survey participants
Over the past month or so I’ve been collecting results for a short survey I created about solo videojournalist pay. I have about 28 responses right now, which isn’t too shabby. Still, I’d like to get more before I release the results. Could you take the survey? Only 10 questions, and a couple minutes time tops. a Last request for survey participants Read Full Story
What are you doing to cover sports with video?
Innovative Interactivity has a great guest post today by Brian Vernellis about covering sports with online video. The Times produces three weekly high school shows – a game of the week, a city game of the week and an area game of the week. The goal was to create a SportsCenter style of show for readers – two talking heads (asst. SE, high school writer), a couple of coaches’ interviews and b-roll. Voila. The trick is keeping those videos under four minutes. Talking heads have a tendency to ram... Read Full Story

Why close ups are so cool
Steve Mort had a nice post last week about his love affair with close-up shots (compared to wide). This is something I preach a lot, and Steve has some great practical advice about why tight shots are so important for your story. When a story is rich in color, which this one is, tight-shots take the viewer much closer to what you’re trying to show. It adds character to the story. People’s faces are expressive - you get a much better feeling for who the people are that you’re... Read Full Story

Mashable has a collection of 10 citizen videos from the Iran protests that show how important online video has become for showing things the government would prefer to hide. But online video: This is how they can make the video CARE about what’s happening to them. Years ago, this wouldn’t have been possible. First, we needed wide-spread access to affordable ... Las Vegas Sun’s new TV show
The folks at the Las Vegas Sun have something new to make you jealous. They’ve launched 702.tv, a combo TV show / cool web site that is devoted to entertainment news. But 702 also includes actual news news thrown in to surreptitiously “inform those who don’t want to be informed, or who didn’t even know they needed to be informed” according to news guru Rob Curley (in an email he sent me before last week’s launch). According to Rob: We often describe the 70... Read Full Story

The importance of writing to your video
Shawn Montano of the Edit Foundry has a post that, to me, illustrates how important it is for video journalists to write scripts based upon the video that accompanies the story. Quite often I’ll get a story that a reporter has written with more than a few lines in which I challenge myself to find shots [...]a The importance of writing to your video Read Full Story
