Better Than the Motorbike

I’m a big fan of David Suzuki, the Canadian scientist, environmentalist and alarmist. He’s a good man with honest intent and a superb intelligence. I am of the opinion we all need to stop, listen and heed what he and other reputable scientists are saying. Many have tired of explaining things to a political machine that cannot grasp concepts longer than the cheap sound-bite they need to convince the public that their lobbyist needs are more important than the health of Mother Earth or the... Got up this morning and headed for the bathroom. This was important as some of my medicines dictate “needs” that are very persistent upon my body becoming upright.              I entered the hallway and went to my bathroom, better known as “the swamp” to Emily. Molly, the hyper “Aussie-doodle” greeted me before I got there wanting to go outside. I weighed the options and headed towards the front of the house, Molly leading the way.             “I think Dixie needs to go out” Emily muttered... Read Full Story

“Need Fuel for LearJet ” If yesterdays placard phrase was original, the guy should get credit. It’s a cute phrase and, as an avid fan of word-smithery, I applaud whoever came up with it. I’m seeing a better class of vagabond on the streets and it’s scary. Along with the increase in wayward sidewalk dwellers I see a plethora of stores going up, everywhere. I can see the “staple” stores making it but the specialty and luxury retailers create a unique landscape. “Go past the fourth Target and... Read Full Story

The drive to southern Oregon passes through amazing scenery: endless yellow, brown and red leaves accent the end of summer. Each turn of the highway brings more until you find it hard to believe Mother Nature can offer up any more. But she does. We passed under and through dark clouds but it didn’t rain. The free pass ended as we pulled into Merlin, our destination, and the skies gave us a brief but dramatic deluge.           The people on the road are always unique to the trip but repetitive... I’ve come to the sad conclusion the sharp pain in my elbow is caused by my walking stick. All the troubleshooting diagrams point right to it           My grandchildren all pitched in and gave it to me last Christmas to replace the one they’d given me the previous year. They were pleasantly surprised to discover I use one of their gifts daily. Besides, it wouldn't fit in the drawer with the collection of Chia pets and key chain gizmos.             This later one is a much better model. Made... Read Full Story

After failing to get rid of our old SPA on Craig's List I grabbed my sawzall and cut it into about twenty pieces. The mess completely filled my trash trailer constructed from an old pickup bed.   I hooked it up to my Jeep and drove to the landfill. "Landfill" is the politically correct term for "dump".           I try to schedule these trips at "low usage" periods, usually mid- afternoon on a weekday. This isn't due to being anti-social. I have a horrible time backing up... Read Full Story

When my cell phone began to refuse commands last week I was a bit surprised. After all I’d been hoping it would develop a reason to go to “phone heaven” for over a year without success. I’d given up. This wasn’t something I did, I thought. Then I remembered that swan dive it took into the hot tub last week. I guess the ten second rule doesn’t apply to electronics crap. I’d like to report that I got a brand new phone out of the mess but unfortunately it doesn’t work that way. By the time I was... Read Full Story

The last few days have been odd. I have a lot of energy but my body is still wrapped up with fighting the endless hip “insurgency”. I’m pretty sure this most recent contraption is going to work but the conflict between hi-tech and geezer reality falls short of any plans to return to my former life.   The doc smiled softly when he added the “no restrictions” to his post-surgery monologue. It didn’t take long to figure it out.            The decades of daily bike riding, cross country skiing... Read Full Story
