Inauguration Day 2009

I watched the Inauguration of this nations 44th President.

I was surprisingly pleased. I didn't vote for him - but he is now my President, and so I support him and my thoughts and prayers are with him as he struggles with the weight that is around his shoulders.

It isn't a small weight. He is dealing with a struggling economy, a divided nation, a view that America is "bad" and "too aggressive." These are not small issues, and they are not things that can be fixed with a pretty speech.

He made many statements in his speech: personal responsibility and commitment to everyone had big places. As did having government help people find jobs, ending programs that didn't work, and the struggles the African-American community has overcome. He wants to fix schools, restore science to its "rightful" place, and repair America's standing in the world. All of these things take time - maybe more time than he has.

Every President will be judged by his actions. He was, and has been, remarkably short on details in his speeches and plans. ONly time will tell what kind of President he will be. He wants to be a healer - Lincoln is his role model. There are worse role models to have. Lincoln took the country through a time of struggle and healing. If he can be 1/10th the President that Lincoln was, I think we will be okay.

He is my President. He has my support, hopes, prayers and goodwill....until he does something that I, in good conscience, cannot support. Until then, I hope he succeeds in some of his goals (especially ending government programs that don't work).
