Claude Stanley Choules, the last known combat veteran from World War I, died this week at a nursing home in the Australia city of Perth at 110 years old.
Born in Britain, Choules — nicknamed “Chuckles” by his shipmates in the Australian Navy — had a 41-year military career that began with training with the British Royal Navy, just one month after he turned 14.

The Doolittle Raid, held on April 18th, 1942, was the first air raid by the United States to attack the Japanese islands during World War II.
The raid was important because by illustrating that Japan was vulnerable to American air attack, it provided a morale boost and opportunity for U.S. retaliation after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor five months prior.

The Siege of Budapest centered on the Hungarian capital city of Budapest. It was fought towards the end of World War II in Europe, during the Soviet Budapest Offensive.

Geraldine Hoff Doyle of Lansing Michigan, the woman behind the iconic Rosie the Riveter poster during WWII, has died at 86, according to the Lansing State Journal.
Doyle was a 17-year-old factory worker at a metal-pressing plant in Ann Arbor when she was captured by a United Press International photographer. Her photograph was the basis for the popular propaganda poster that was created to encourage women to enter the workforce to support the war effort on the home front.

Newspapers and other news organizations across the world have were duped yesterday by an image provided by the Web site of Sepah News, the PR organization for the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. The image of a missile launch test that Sepah provided was photoshopped to show four rockets in the air, not the three that were actually launched. Many major media outlets, including the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, and Chicago Tribute placed the false image on their front pages.
