The web is littered with more than its fair share of customer service stories so I figure it's about time to throw in a more positive experience to balance things out. For those who have never bothered to read any of my profiles, I happen to work in a call center and thus am pretty close to the customer service industry. Heck, I train it for a living. Given the nature of my job, it seems only natural that I've come to expect a certain quality of service from the various representatives and... Read Full Story
In the course of going through 14GB worth of Marvel comic book crossovers and epic events, you know you're bound to come across some major duds sooner or later. Let's face it - just because you get most of the Marvel comic book universe in one place doesn't mean you're going to be in for a great ride. Some stories are just...wrong. Enter the three-issue 1982 class, Contest of Champions, a comic book that tried to bring all the heroes together for a battle on a cosmic level with some, well... Read Full Story
Ever since the new first broke out that same-sex marriages were again legal in the state of California, I guess it was only a matter of time before we'd see some major celebrity couple tie the knot. And as promised on her show, Ellen DeGeneres did indeed tie the knot with her partner Portia de Rossi this past weekend, much to the delight of her fans around the work - this gay geek included. Here's what she had to say about the blessed event on her official blog: Image from Ellen's Website... Read Full Story
After watching that brilliant piece of film-making known as The Dark Knight, I couldn't help but start looking for a copy of Batman: The Killing Joke. Not only is it the creation of the brilliant yet eccentric Alan Moore, in many ways it remains one of the more definitive explorations of the Joker's possible origins and the characterization was used as a basis for Heath Ledger's portrayal to some extent. Despite being a life-long Spider-Man fan, my mother's collection of Batman comics (yes... Read Full Story
I've been a Spider-Man fan for most of my life. It's hard to explain it - perhaps it's because of him being a science nerd who eventually got to get superpowers and be one of the coolest heroes around. Perhaps it's because a part of me wanted to be able to make those same quips and witty remarks like how he would as he battled his enemies. Or maybe I just thought he was hot (and he is!) LOL. Whatever the reason, I'm naturally drawn to revisiting his greatest moments in terms of his comic... Read Full Story
There's something about shadow play that is fun beyond belief. Personally, I can barely manage a decent dog or a bunny rabbit so it always amazes me when people do some pretty interesting things with just their hands, shadows and light. The you get groups like Pilobolus who do even more amazing things with pretty much their entire bodies. I mean seriously, how do they come up with things like this? Here's their appearance on Conan O-Brien - enjoy the video while you can. I bet it's going to... Read Full Story
In the course of my cruising the internet, I stumbled across an almost 14Gb torrent for most of the major Marvel cross-overs in the past 30 or so years. Although at the time I had only been looking for a copy of The Infinity Gauntlet, this seemed too tempting not to attempt to download. Thus in the coming weeks, expect to see me review a large number of marvel comic books, if only to keep pace with all the stories I now have access to. Yes, even the hokey ones. As a kid, I got into the... Read Full Story
Marvel really hit it big when they introduced the planet-eating cosmic being known as Galactus. I have to admit that I've always been fascinated by him given the scale that he has to operate on in terms of traveling the cosmos in search of suitable planets and all that. What can I say - I guess to some extent a lot of us just like them bigger, right? When the creative team of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby came up with the idea of Galactus, they were thinking of changing the nature of the villains... Read Full Story
Image via Wikipedia Recently CNET's Webware did a pretty in-depth review of the personal online finance service Mint.com, and given the many features described, a geek like me was pretty excited about the prospects of trying it out. Of course when I checked out their FAQs, there stood the blazing warning that they did not support financial institutions outside the US at this time. Bugger. I applied myself into more Google-searching and checked the info pages for other online services like... Read Full Story
After last year's successful first run, the diverse group of volunteer bloggers and the staff of Envato have announced that October 15, 2008 is officially this year's Blog Action Day. This is now officially an annual event (I saw "now" since this is only its second year) where the group tries to get the global blogosphere to blog about one topic for that day as a sort of meeting of the minds. This year's theme is Poverty and given that the Geeky Guide missed out on this even last year, this... Read Full Story
