It's interesting how directors and pretty much anyone in the movie industry develop over time. As much as we always remember them for their landmark works that change the face cinema as we know it, you won't necessarily find similar styles, themes or techniques in their earlier works when they were still honing their craft. Thus it becomes quite the interesting experience to go back into their movie history to see how they were like before they hit it big and really started to define their ar... Read Full Story
Image via WikipediaSo I've been using Google Wave for about a month now and it's been pretty cool but of course a tad confusing at times. I think all new Google Wave users get that initial "Yay, I have an invite!" feeling that's quickly followed by the "Great, now what do I do with this?" notion immediately after. It's definitely a different concept that only really makes more sense when you have more contacts to Wave with - this is a social communication tool after all.
To get a better idea... Read Full Story
Last week I talked about my camera considerations in my efforts to replace the one that was stolen pretty much last year. Now I'm thinking of getting around to replacing my stolen laptop from the time...but perhaps a laptop isn't the way to go anymore.
Image via WikipediaMore and more I've been thinking about getting a netbook since (1) I mainly want to use it for blogging on the go, (2) I don't run many applications anymore, (3) I do a lot of work on the cloud and (4) they're a heck of a lo... Read Full Story
Oh My God...it's the last week of NaNoWriMo! It's the home stretch people and I'm barely at 35,000 words! I have about 6 days left to come up with the amazing 15,000 words and hopefully some sense of resolution to this entire story.
Do you think I can make it? Am I geeky enough? Can I skip enough of my work-related tasks to get around to writing instead? Perhaps I can feign sickness on Thanksgiving Day or something?
Oh woe is me. Decisions, decisions.
Such is the wonderful madness that is ... Read Full Story
Ninja hold an almost mythical status in terms of popular culture for pretty good reasons. Let's face it - the idea of various orders of covert assassins, spies and generally secretive warriors can blow the mind sometimes and many movies and TV shows have taken advantage of that support to help cement the ninja's place in our shared social consciousness.
But as with anything touched by so many people (and creative people at that!), the true story of the ninja has become warped and twisted ove... Read Full Story
In the continued efforts to pressure the Philippine COMELEC to change their ruling that Ang Ladlad is ineligible to run as a party list in the coming elections on the grounds that the group is "immoral" and is a "threat to the youth", there are a number of protest actions being planned as we fight for our right to representation.
The following message is making the rounds around the web and of course the Geeky Guide supports this movement and all that it stands for.
Stand up! Be recognized!... Read Full Story
Whether we like it or not, there are certain stereotypes that we've all come to accept in terms of mainstream Hollywood cinema. We know exactly the kind of stupid things action heroes do time after time after time, we instinctively react to the incidental mood music in romantic pieces and so on and so forth.
At the same time, there are those somewhat negative stereotypes that have managed to survive over the years. Gay characters are meant to be flighty, loud and shallow. A woman's cup size... Read Full Story
When I decided to better organize the way I approach Geeky Guide entries, I picked a category of entries for each day of the week. Mondays were for new movies while Fridays were for old movies and so on.
Thursdays was meant to be my TV day and that hasn't quite gone well since I tend to favor reviewing entire seasons of shows and not just individual episodes. This means that unless I've actually finished a TV show's season, then I had little to write about. Thus Thursdays have been joined by... Read Full Story
Image via WikipediaI've always had a pretty liberal approach to cameras and photography. I hate twiddling with too many settings and I have no ambitions of lugging around variable lenses and the like. I feel you just need a decent camera with a good amount of optical zoom and good photo editing skills.
I used to have a Sony CyberShot DSC-H50, which was an awesome camera for both still photography and the occasional video. But this got stolen and I've been hurting ever since. Not I'm thinking... Read Full Story
Good grief, we're past the half way mark and it's already the start of the third week for NaNoWriMo. Just today I officially crept over the half way mark in terms of my word count with 26,726 words despite things like Facebook, geeky network TV, a new writing gig at the New Worlds Alliance website and of course real life concerns like work and enjoying time with my partner. Oh yes, so many things seem to want to stand in the way of my NaNoWriMo efforts to no avail - I shall keep writing!
