My toughest lesson
This article touches upon the most difficult lesson I've had to learn so far in my marathon training: rest is important. In honor of this article, I'm taking the day off from running today due to fatigue. Living Well: Make rest days and easy days part of your running regimen Overachievers give local running coach Chuck Bartlett the most trouble. "It's tough to get them to cut back on distance or pace or days," said Bartlett, director of the official Seattle Marathon training program... Read Full Story
24 miles so far this week!
...Had you ever seen a "Marathon Cookie" before? Neither had I... After an eight mile run tonight, during which I watched the Creighton basketball team get their butts handed to them by Indiana State (minus Larry Bird), I have now completed 24 miles for the week. By week's end, I will have run 34 miles, and will be ready for my 12 mile run on Sunday. The only problem to date, as far as I can tell, is that I'm going through t-shirts really fast and my nipples have been tender a few times... Read Full Story
When the President Talks to God
During my four mile run today, I listened a mix of the 'Bright Eyes' on my iPod, which consists of 'I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning,' 'Cassadaga,' and a selection of individual songs from other albums. The line that sticks in my head the most from today's run comes from Oberst's song, 'When the President Talks to God.' Oberst sings: When the president talks to GodDoes he ever think that maybe he's not? That that voice is just inside his headWhen he kneels next to the presidential bedDoes he ever... Read Full Story
5 Miles and some 'Dirty Jobs'
Tonight, as a sort of warm-up for the 10-mile run I have to complete on Sunday, I ran five miles on my treadmill while watching 'Dirty Jobs' on the Discovery Channel. Overall, I felt pretty good, which is more than I can say for Mike Rowe, the host of 'Dirty Jobs.' In tonight's episode, he helped a couple (They were both chiropractors, but ran a reptile farm for a living. Huh?) clean a reptile farm. This meant he had to lift 90 lb. reticulated boa constrictors (one of which pooped on him... Read Full Story
My journey to Nashville and 26.2
After several weeks of base-training (from which I am now taking a break - this is my week off!) I will, today, begin to chronical my journey toward my ultimate goal - the Country Music Marathon in Nashville, Tennessee. After accomplishing this goal, I will be able to cross "run a marathon" off of my "Do before I die" list (if it doesn't kill me). My decision to run the Country Music Marathon boils down to the fact that, if I start my full training this Sunday, the date of the marathon fits... Read Full Story

Updated College Basketball RPI
While the college basketball Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) is not the be-all-end-all (Vanderbilt #1?), and doesn't seem to be heaviliy valued by the NCAA Selection Committee (Missouri State anyone?), it is interesting to see where your favorite team lands in this often-discussed ranking system. It looks to me like the Atlantic 10 has taken over the Missouri Valley's spot as the top dog of the mid-majors. Here are the top 50 college basketball teams in the nation, according to the December... Read Full Story
Big XII top basketball league in nation?
If you can get past the fact that the College Basketball Editor for Rivals.com wrote that the Nebraska-Oregon game took place in Lincoln (instead of Omaha, where it actually took place), this is a pretty interesting article. When it comes to Nebraska's win over Oregon, it remains to be seen how impressive the win was...I'm not sure Oregon is all that good. Against Saint Mary's, Kansas State and Nebraska, the Ducks are 1-2, with their only win coming in overtime at K-State...and remember... Read Full Story
Ex-coach got "screwed" for allegedly trying to screw player
Last year, my brother's ex-player, Karl White, called him to say that "crazy" things were happening on the University of Illinois-Chicago basketball team. I never heard the whole story, but I'm guessing it had something to do with this... 'I just got screwed,' says ex-UIC coach BY DAVE NEWBART Staff Reporter/dnewbart@suntimes.com When the charges surfaced last December, they were virtually unheard of in the world of college basketball: Lynn Mitchem, an assistant men's basketball coach at... Beginning of the end for the NHL?
It's no secret that the National Hockey League has struggled to remain relevant in the United States. Now, with lagging nation-wide popularity and a greatly devalued U.S. dollar, European interests are primed to make a run at some of the top players in the NHL, which could mean the beginning of the end for the League: Rival hockey league to raid the NHL Russian tycoon plans European competitor that will go after playersRick Westhead - Sports business columnist A Russian tycoon with a...
