NFL Power Ten—Patriots, Chargers Top Preseason Power Ten
The problem with most power rankings is that once you get out of the top ten it becomes next to impossible to distinguish who’s better than who. I mean, how do you decide between six fringe playoff teams (or even worse, ten non-playoff teams) who are all within a couple of games of each other? I'll leave that to the experts, like Pete Prisco... ...sorry, couldn't even type that with a straight face. I’ll be checking in with a couple more of these before the start of the regular season... Jason Taylor Dances His Way To The Washington Redskins
The Dolphins have traded Jason Taylor to the Washington Redskins for a second round draft pick in 2009 and a sixth round pick in 2010. With the trade, the Dolphins are able to move a disgruntled player out of their locker room and the Redskins are able to replace Phillip Daniels, who they’ve lost for the season, with one of the best defensive players in the NFL. Couple of quick thoughts on the move: 1) Is this really all they could get? There are going to be a ton of fans angry that there... Read Full Story
Manny Being Manny: Has Red Sox Nation Grown Tired Of Manny Ramirez?
About a year ago, I forced myself to stop listening to local sports talk radio. For those of you who’ve never lived in Boston, it’s almost impossible to escape WEEI. It’s playing on every car radio, in every corner store, and in every backyard that’s close enough to Boston to receive it’s signal. The problem with WEEI is that the vast majority of the callers are over-opinionated, sky-is-always-falling types. You want to know where Boston fans got their negative reputation from, just do what... Read Full Story
Shawne Merriman, San Diego Chargers Better Than The New England Patriots
It pains me, and I mean it really pains me, to admit this. The San Diego Chargers, not the New England Patriots, are the team to beat in the AFC right now. I’ve already gone on record saying that the Chargers would have beaten the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game had they not suffered a ridiculous rash of injuries to their key offensive players. They were the better team by the end of January, partly because the Patriots were completely spent by their quest for an undefeated season... Read Full Story
Brett Favre, Green Bay Packers, Tampering Vikings and The Continuing Soap Opera
The Brett Favre soap opera took another turn yesterday as FoxSports.com reported that the Packers have filed tampering charges against the Vikings for allegedly contacting Favre during the off-season. The Packers claim that Darrell Bevell, who was an assistant coach with the Packers and is a friend of Favre’s, has been in contact with him during the off-season. Some reports even claim Favre had a conversation with Brad Childress. If the charges turn out to be true, the Vikings will probably... Read Full Story
Disowning Jeremy Jacobs' Boston Bruins: Help Me Find a New Hockey Team
Rumors were floating around Boston last week that the honorable (cough) Jeremy Jacobs was thinking about selling the Boston Bruins. For a few seconds, I thought there was a chance I’d have my hockey team back again. But alas, it wasn’t to be. You see, the multi-billionaire was just trying to figure out the full value of his cash-cow. What he discovered (according to the Boston Globe) was that should he put the Bruins and everything associated with the Bruins for sale, the starting price... Read Full Story
Sports Musings: Brewers Buy, Philly Brand, Old Favre, and Unwanted Bonds
I've fallen off the sports planet over the last week due to Guitar Hero III. I made the mistake of allowing my wife to borrow the game from my sister-in-law's kids. Big mistake. I'm averaging nine hours of work, two hours of commuting, 10 hours of Guitar Hero, and three hours of sleep this week. That stupid game is so ridiculously addictive...and the thing is, I'm not even sure I like it. I just have an uncontrollable urge to master it. Not that falling off the sports planet is a bad thing... Read Full Story
The Rays Are Good, A-Rod Likes Madonna, and Other Things I've Recently Learned
The Rays are the best team in the American League East right now. They have everything, from young power pitchers to young, exciting hitters. They might have more “tools” than any starting lineup in baseball. Their only weakness is youth. Their pitching staff is loaded with guys who aren’t used to throwing a ton of innings. Because of that, they probably won't hang on in the AL East. But regardless, as the Red Sox learned this week, the Rays are for real. I was right about Brett Favre... Read Full Story
PEDs in Sports: Why Bonds and Clemens Should Both Be in The Hall Of Fame
Ever since the feds raided BALCO and we all learned that Barry Bonds was a cheater, there has been an ongoing debate over PEDs (performance enhancing drugs) in sports. For the most part, the entire country has come to the following consensus: Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte, Jose Canseco, and everyone who has either tested positive for or been caught up in any of the multiple government or independent investigations on PEDs are all cheaters. They shouldn’t be in the hall of fame... Read Full Story
NFL Musings: Don Imus Makes Pacman Jones As Sad As Javon Walker Is Stupid
How long until ESPN’s Jemele Hill calls for Don Imus to be fired again? First of all, Don Imus hasn’t been relevant since the eighties (coincidentally, when he was in his eighties). Stop pretending anyone cares about anything he says. He’s a hundred years old, he looks like he’s been dead for fifteen years, and he wears a stupid cowboy hat. The ridiculous uproar over his “Nappy” comment is what temporarily brought him back to relevance. Now that he’s slipped back into obscurity, he’s trying... Read Full Story
