Sihanoukville Power Cuts
I don’t fully understand why, but over the past 4 or 5 days Sihanoukville has been plunged into darkness on way too many occasions. The most I’ve noticed is around 15 times in one day, yet nobody seems particularly ‘phased’ by this. The common response is “happens every year”. I have to admit though, it’s pretty frustrating for someone that needs to spend most of their daytime online. Effectively, it’s wiped out whole days for me, not to mention more work than I care to remember. Lately... Read Full Story
The Happa Restaurant, Sihanoukville Cambodia
The Happa Restaurant, near Serendipity / Ochheuteal, must be one of the best value places to eat in Sihanoukville. Consisting of three separate eating areas, each with its own particular ’style’ of food on offer. Sadly the Japanese and ‘Fusion’ sections are closed at the moment due to the Rainy Season, however the Teppanyaki Restaurant is open. Teppanyaki is similar in presentation to Spanish Tapas, with lots of small dishes on offer which provide the opportunity to ‘pick and mix’ your meal... Read Full Story
Travellers Rest
The Travellers Rest, next door to the Orange Supermarket on the same road as the Freedom Bar, is a popular morning port of call with the many expats in Sihanoukville. Very reasonably priced with a wide selection of drinks, light meals and hearty breakfasts. Opening at around 7:30 till 14:30 it’s the perfect place to start your day and catch up with the latest news from around town. The owner ensures that the many Cambodia publications, such as “Cambodia Daily”, the “Bayon Pearnik” and... Read Full Story
Angkor Brewery Tour
The local Brewery (’Cambrew Ltd’, part of the Carlsberg Group), who supply Angkor, Heineken, Asahi and Klang Beers (amongst others), open their door to visitors every Wednesday from 3pm til 5pm, and after many failed attempts to pay a visit to the Angkor Brewery here in Sihanoukville, I eventually ‘took the tour’ on wednesday this week. Even this occasion was a little of a gamble though, I spoke with another expat in the Freedom Bar and he reported that the Brewery Tour was closed down... Read Full Story

Cambodia Elections
Well the election campaigns are in full swing here in Snooky. I know this as they drive in ‘convoys’ past my window every moring at around 7am …… speakers and ‘megaphones’ at full volume! Everything seems very well organised, very friendly too with happy smiling faces and plenty of flag flying and waving by the loyal supporters in the Pick-ups and those along the roadside. Not speaking the language, I’d very easily be taken in by the visual spectacle that I see. It’s only when I go online to... Read Full Story
Speedpool Competition at the Golden Lion Plaza
Seems that the owners of the bars over at the Golden Lion Plaza are working hard to attract the ‘low season’ crowds. Just this week I’ve attended two great nights at the Plaza. The latest event was last saturdays ‘Speedpool’ competition. Since moving to Sihanoukville, it’s been hard to avoid the Pool Tables, most bars have them and they are extremely popular with expats, visitors and local girls alike. With this in mind, I’m actually developing into a reasonable player, often able to beat... Read Full Story
Sihanoukville Crab Racing Association
The inaugural meeting of the Sihanoukville Crab Racing Association was held last wednesday at the Golden Lion Plaza, specifically Plastic Paddy’s and The Shipwreck Bar. I was ‘reliably’ informed that many months of training has gone into the preparation of these specially bred Racing Crabs and it was obvious by the dedication of many of the owners / trainers, that they are taking this sport seriously. It was an excellent turnout and many punters were putting their ’shirts’ on their favourites... Read Full Story
Cambodian Night @ the Freedom Bar & Hotel
Live music seems to be the order of the day here in Sihanoukville, with the Freedom Bar and Hotel staging an alternative to their semi-regular Route 66 nights. Last weeked they had a Sihanoukville based Cambodia band on stage, Red Hair. This made a pleasant change for me as i’m not really a fan of American ‘rock’ music. This “Cambodian Night” probably wasn’t as well attended as the “Route 66″ nights, but for me it was much more ‘fun’. Certainly the girls enjoyed themselves and once the band... Read Full Story
X Makeena give a great performance at Pocoloco
I wasn’t too sure what to expect when I visited the Pocoloco, Sihanoukville, to see X Makeena. The French band who, reportedly, successfully blend ‘Hip Hop’ and ‘Drum and Bass’ music, neither of which are particular favourites of mine. However, I must say that I was ‘blown away’ by their stage act. Most of the bands in this music genre seem to do little but work at their electronic keyboards, Synths, Computers, etc, X Makeena are different. Very different. Their performance on stage was not...
