Considering homeschooling for your child? Do you know the pros and cons of homeschooling?

Homeschooling provides a very flexible learning environment for your child. You also have control over your child’s curriculum. But how you handle this control decides whether homeschooling is an advantage or not.

Do you need to be a certified teacher to home-school your child? Of course not. What you do need is the desire to give your child a quality education. And if there are certain subjects you just do not feel qualified or comfortable to teach, you can always hire a tutor.

One of the many pros of homeschooling is that you determine your child’s curriculum. You have the control to incorporate your own religious and moral beliefs into your teaching agenda. You, therefore, have more control over shaping your child’s core values.

However, successfully homeschooling your child demands the following two requirements from the parents. First, a true desire to teach your child. Second, a willingness to put forth the effort to make it happen.

If you want to home-school because of a sense of duty or religious obligation, and not because of a desire to help your child, homeschooling may not be the right choice. Without the desire and determination of the parent, not enough effort will be put forth to properly educate the child.

A major advantage of homeschooling is the one-on-one attention your child gets from his teacher. With the different learning styles of each student, discipline problems in the class, and regulations that need to be followed, a public school teacher just cannot devote much individual time with each student to bring out their best. Homeschooling helps bring out a child’s full potential like nothing else can.

A disadvantage of public schools is that their curriculum is all laid out for them and they must move at a predetermined rate. Children who pick up the material quickly, will have to wait – any usually get bored and start to lose interest. Other children will take longer to understand the subject. But the teacher only has a certain window to work within, so some students may never understand the subject before moving on.

A major advantage with homeschooling is the fact that you control the teaching pace and curriculum. If your child is struggling, whether they need an extra 30 minutes or 3 hours, you can adjust your teaching schedule to make sure they understand before moving on. Likewise, if you find a subject your child gets excited about, extra time can be allotted to fuel their personal educational quest.

There are disadvantages to homeschooling to go along with the numerous advantages. The biggest is your personal time. You need to be devoted and committed to your child’s education and this will take up lots of time – from determining your curriculum to teaching for your particular child’s learning style. But you will find in the end that it was well worth your time.

You may find that instructing your child is even more gratifying for you than it is for your child. There is nothing like watching your child understand and use concepts that you taught. If you would like to create a special bond with your child, homeschooling may be the way. To learn more about the pros and cons of homeschooling, please visit the Home School vs Public School blog.
