Sony Electronics has announced that owners of BRAVIA HDTV’s and Blu-ray players will be able to rent the movie “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” online up to four weeks before it is available on DVD and Blu-ray. Already available for the Xbox 360 Netflix and Sony today announced that movies and TV shows will soon be available via Netflix streaming on the PS3. The system sounds a little weird in that users will visit www.netflix.com/ps3 and sign up for the service. They will then receive a Blu-ray disk featuring BD-Live software to enable streaming. Video Business reports that DEG: Digital Entertainment Group reports that Blu-ray purchases are up 83% year on year while overall sales of home entertainment was down 3.2% including digital distribution. Hot Hardware reports that TDI has created a 10 layer disk using Blu-ray’s Blue laser technology to hold up to 320MB. Yahoo Tech News is reporting that Sony will start including PSP movies on Blu-ray disks. Users will be able to download a lower resolution version of the movie from a Blu-ray disk via their PS3 to their PSP.
