Deconstructing Prostitution: The Freelancer (pt I)

This post has so many qualifications that I can honestly say that I really don’t know where to start (’the beginning’, I hear you say). Let me first say that I do not claim to be an expert on the subject and that what follows is only my personal opinion (I’ll let you be the judge of my credentials).

Furthermore, to the *indoctrinated* (read into that what you will), the following may not be exactly cutting edge cultural deconstructionism. Whatever. Having just been with a lady which falls within the definition of ‘freelancer’, I feel inspired to write up my thoughts on the matter (and no, I didn’t fuck her).

Said qualifications are thus:

  • I’m only talking about girls that work for themselves (and by extension, tend to frequent a certain bar in Phnom Penh)
  • The following is not typical of bar girls in general
  • I haven’t slept
  • I’m arguably (i.e. most probably) talking shit

So anyway, having just smoked some crank with a freelance hooker (it wouldn’t be a first), we started to discuss prostitution and what the life of a freelance hooker entails. Before outlining said details, you should note that I’m only talking about a small percentage of working girls and that what follows is certainly not typical of your average bar girl.

Some (stereotypical) clarifications are in order:

  • *good girl* - typically works in a restaurant or the like. Will NOT have sex unless has dated for a prolonged period of time and marriage is offered. Typically a virgin (99%)
  • *bar girl* - To write a bullet point on such a contested subject is poor. However, I’ll just say that there are some girls that work in bars that you can pay a $5 bar fine and take home and fuck (price open to negotiation).
  • Other girls will just *flirt* and get as many drinks out of you as possible with no intention of having sex. (I can’t be fucked to disseminate the concept of ‘bar girl’ any more: if you want to elaborate then you know where the comment box is).

  • *Freelancer* - Doesn’t have a contractual employment in a bar and fucks on a ‘when needed’ basis (usually around the clock).

Most freelancers - again this one is open to discussion - will typically charge between $10-20 for sex (too many variables apply for this one to be taken on face value). For example, if the guy’s pissed beyond belief then he’s going to get robbed (not only in terms of price, but you can bet your bottom dollar that he’ll also kiss his belongings goodbye after the ‘act’).

I digress. The inspiration for writing this post was the previously mentioned discussion with said freelance girl. She advised me that one guy paid her $35 a day and gave her other gifts, i.e. phone, clothes, etc. In addition, he gave her $200 when he left.

In light of the fact that most *bar girls* who work for a bar earn between $40-$60 a month (minus prostitution if applicable), that’s a rather large sum of money. Needless to say that the girl could of been talking shit - and believe me, smoking crystal-meth makes you talk shit with the best of ‘em - but it’s a sum I’ve heard passed around by many a freelance girl (and no, I don’t believe what I read in the press). There are just too many men that come here and throw money around (hmmm, some irony in that last sentence methinks).

And this is where it gets interesting (if you’re still reading, that is). Said money is spent playing cards with fellow crystal-meth hookers. Again, the figures you have to take at face value, but she advised me that she lost $700 in one month (you should also note that she sold the phone). To be honest, I can believe it. I’ve been with a few girls and they’re more than mad when it comes to playing cards for money.

So what’s my point? Nothing. I haven’t posted in ages and thought I’d write it up. As mentioned, the above is just me writing what’s in my head and it’s certainly not an authoritative statement on the matter.

Anyway, I better sign off because said hooker is asleep in my apartment (I told you already, I DIDN’T fuck her).
