Yet here it is, the formerly-obscure-to-me pianist Steve Acho covering “It’s Been a While.” And he does a damn good job. It’s an unlikely match of music styles in this song, but it works.
Acho even does a more-than-passable angry, ragged Aaron Lewis vocal matchup. I tell you it’s impressive.
Definitely worth a download at Amazon—14 songs [...] Read Full Story
Somebody had to do it. Velvet Revolver begged off immediately and The Rolling Stones are just too old. So doing a cover of Nirvana’s “Rape Me” as a lounge act is none other than Richard Cheese.
Richard Cheese? Who the heck… I’m kind of repulsed enough by the song (having listened to it 3 times) that I can’t bring myself to Google him for a bio.
The song is from Cheese’s album Lounge Against the Machine, a title I found to be amusing.
He begins the so... Read Full Story
Sorry about the 1 lonely post, I have a hard time keeping up with things.
I’ve been thinking about my dad lately (don’t know why.)
So how does my un-relationship with him affect me now?
I’m not sure what it would be like to have a relationship with him, to scared to find out. Not scared exactly, just not ready. I know that if I can accept him for who he is I could have a fine relationship with him, but I don’t know who he is and he definitely doesn̵... Read Full Story

It’s not Bright Eyes, but it sure sounds like it. “It” would be the new eponymous solo release by Conor Oberst. I’m a huge Bright Eyes fan, as this blog would attest to, but I had no idea this record was coming out.
I’m usually up on these things. For example, I waited three agonizingly long months for Wilco’s Sky Blue Sky after hearing word it would be released. But my head was in the sand for this one, a... Read Full Story

Once in a while a song comes along that just grabs you and won’t let go. You listen to it over and over, pissing off whoever you live with.
That’s what happened to me with the song “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz. The first time I heard it, I had no idea who was singing but I was thinking, “How could I have missed this before?”
You know that feeling when you’re listening to a band you never heard before a... Read Full Story

When it finally sank in that I would no longer be seeing 6 and 2old daughters everyday anymore, it felt strange and disturbingly uneasy to consider the future. It seemed like I had lost everything.
Complicating the custody decision was the 100 or so miles that stretched from my front door to my ex’s house. I had no choice when I moved out of town: kicked out of my own house, I was living in a small apartment with the kindest Korean landlords but a head-full of confusion.

He said, “do an opening post!” Here I go again, so much to say and nothing comes to mind. This’ll happen. I’m gonna start with a little story (a little history one might say). An overture of my life as a child of divorce and drama.
The first feelings I can remember as a child are anxiety and fear…Example: my favorite book as a child was “The Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day.” I related to the main character as a child, and many days throug... Read Full Story

I recently enjoyed watching the classic ’80s movie Highlander again, the film that spawned all those rather rotten TV spin-offs. The movie, however, is the real deal. Definitely the best sword fighting among immortals ever to grace the screen. Christopher Lambert deftly plays the lead role, and Sean Connery shows up as an effeminate, ageless tutor for Lambert’s character.
If you’re into beheadings (and who isn’t?) t... Read Full Story

Jeff Tweedy looks a little bit like Bobby D, especially when scruffy. In fact, Tweedy looks more like the rock ‘n’ roll icon than Dylan’s own son, Jakob. Imho, if I may…
Maybe it’s me, or does every project Tweedy touches turn to gold? The Woody Guthrie records Wilco recorded with Billy Bragg were stellar. Not entirely polished, but raw and raucous and introspective and fun. The soundtrack to the Dylan flick “I&... Read Full Story
