Despite last weeks mentioning that Sean Sherk would keep His UFC Lightweight Belt, today, UFC.com announced that on January 19th 2008, Joe Stevenson and BJ Penn will face off at UFC 80 Rapid Fire for the Lightweight Championship Belt once possessed by Sean Sherk. It was announced at the end of The Ultimate Fighter 6 Finale that Forrest Griffin and Quinton Rampage Jackson would be the coaches for TUF season 7. Not only is this an amazing announcement because it validates Forrest as being at a level capable of training UFC newcomers, but additionally, because Forrest is given an opportunity at the end of the season to face off with Rampage! It’s official, Big John McCarthy is retiring as a UFC Referee for an opportunity to become an on-air personality and adviser with Toronto-based The Fight Network. It was announced today by Yahoo Sports that Sean Sherk will keep his UFC lightweight title. According to the short story, today “the UFC confirmed that Sherk remains the promotion’s 155-lb. titleholder.” So I guess this makes the Joe Stevenson / BJ Penn Interim title a worthless tag? Hopefully the winner of the BJ vs Joe fight will get a title shot against Sean.
