UVA Medical Center is one of two Virginia Hospitals offering state-supported opportunities to those often referred to as Pay Grade One (indigent category). This institution is also a major center for a vast number of specialists in every medical discipline who can offer diagnosis and treatment not possible in vast numbers of towns and communities in the State of Virginia. Vikki Bravo, a Clinical Social Worker in the UVA Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center (ECCCC) ,  offered this comment last... Read Full Story

February is off to an active start, especially for lodging assistance for indigent patients staying for up to 30 days at UVA Auxiliary Hospitality House (HH) .  Chemotherapy treatment can take many days, and although an exceptional room rate is allowed for these distance patients, their personal funds simply can't sustain them. Also, you will be pleased to know that our every other week food delivery to HH is so appreciated. I know it is, since Mary Jackson, Manager, tells us weekly. Response... Read Full Story

Baby Smiling Happily
It's So Easy to Make a Difference in an Infant's Life Very precious cargo needs protection! Infant patients cannot be released from the UVA Medical Center without an infant car seat. It's the law. There has been no designated program for this indigent need; however, many families simply cannot afford this absolute requirement of a safety restraint system or a minimum amount of clothing when it's time to take their babies home. IHS is seeking to meet this "unmet" need. What is the IHS... Read Full Story

Blenheim Vineyards & Mountains
Splendid Opportunity for a Wedding! This past Monday, January 9th, we were invited to visit a truly marvelous vineyard in Albemarle County along Carter Mountain Road. It was rainy and cold, probably the least likely time of the year for a wedding. However, once on the farm and inside several of the farm's 1800's style buildings, one could immediately sense all the possibilities for small-medium size weddings inside those cozy buildings. And it is easy to visualize the outside lawn area in... Read Full Story

Some siblings can't be separated and really enjoy sharing. Last Saturday was a special opportunity to support a business friend of IHS.  Knowing our special relationship with the giving community, and how that influences a particular fellow who delights in giving, Marjorie Adam of The Marjorie Adam Team, a Charlottesville Realtor,  requested that we seek out a special early visit by Santa. And guess what?  HE CAME! Marjorie wrote this short note below and provided the following photos to... Read Full Story

Every Day Allows for Giving Thanks

It's good to have a dedicated holiday to gather with friends and family.  All of us need a set-aside day to sit across the table and renew the bonds which bind. Sometimes it is that set-aside day which allows people to have time to travel. Sometimes people find themselves traveling away from home with far too few funds to support themselves, but their duty to themselves or a loved one must take priority.     Student shouted "Drop Zone!" Those people being served by Interfaith Humanitarian... Read Full Story

Thanksgiving at the Table
It is so gratifying to know that we are able to be a part of the safety net for UVA Medical Center patients and families who come from such distances, often not knowing where they will sleep or eat. As you know, we can't be specific with details for privacy reasons. Perhaps it helps to know that one situation, which tends to happen frequently, provides an example of IHS being the only source available to assist. A mother and baby are transferred from another hospital at a great distance to... Read Full Story
